Feldman's List

quote:

6. Brian Kelly, LSU (2023: No. 8)
The 62-year-old Kelly has been very consistent, having now posted seven consecutive seasons of 10 wins or more and a postseason top-16 ranking. Kelly puts together very good teams. The challenge is, can he produce a great one? He’s just 3-5 against Top 25 opponents in two seasons at LSU, and his squads have been blown out in a lot of big games. Since his BCS title game loss to Alabama while at Notre Dame, Kelly’s teams are 5-13 against AP top-10 opponents.

Mandel's List

quote:

6. Brian Kelly, LSU (2022: No. 4)
Kelly is polarizing and easy to nitpick. He just shook up his LSU staff after fielding a woeful defense last season. But zoom out: He’s notched seven consecutive 10-win seasons dating back to Notre Dame; reached a BCS championship game; and made two Playoff fields. He’s off to a 12-4 start in SEC play. There frankly aren’t many active coaches with that quality of resume.

A bunch of recency bias in there ranking Deboer that high

He's definitely a consistent winner and a proven program builder, but like Feldman pretty much said his teams fall flat against Top 10 competition more often than not.

5-13. Until he fixes that he's just very good.

It’s exactly why he left Notre Dame. Going up against those teams w twice the talent, tough to overcome.

From a talent standpoint: 2024 Tigers might be the most pound for pound talented teams he’s ever had, including that 2012 runner up squad.

I can't argue with his ranking right now.

A Coach is only as good as his staff and players around him.

Kelly seems to have fixed the Staff .

What are Leipold and de Boer doing in there? They have almost no track record.
And Swinney 2? I don’t see it.
All hype

Just went back and looked at the 247 composite roster talent rankings, unfortunately they only go back to 2015, BK was at ND 2010-2021.

However, here’s a fun fact, LSUs 22 and 23 teams were substantially higher (in terms of talent) than any team Notre Dame had from 15-21.

I’ll say it again, I think LSU 2024 is the best team he’s ever had, and the roster is only going to get better in 25 and 26.

I agree the 5-13 ain’t great but given how outgunned he was, I don’t think it’s as bad as it looks. Will be fun to see what he can do vs the big dogs w comparable (or in some cases superior) rosters.

My two complaints with CBK:
1) he didn't understand the lay of the land when he came here

2) the train wreck on defense

Those are mistakes a noob makes, not someone who's been a HC for decades (which I suspect was a factor in why he was hired).

He's fixed them both (I hope).

I think leipold deserves to be up there. He’s won at places that are very hard to win at and is doing so with inferior talent compared to his competition.

Deboer is recency bias to be that high, but he also has an astounding win percentage.

Dabo is not adapting to modern times and it’s hurting his program. He is not #2 any longer.

No justifiable reason for DeBust to be top 5

I think people are seriously discounting how cohesion impacts a football team and program. We may have had some talent, but so many faves were new

There should be some recency bias IMO. They are ranking how good the coaches are right now. Just because one guy has been a HC for two more decades doesn't mean that he is currently a better coach.

Kelly teams typically do not perform well versus Top 10 teams regardless of talent, and until he changes that he will never be anything other than an elite program builder. LSU is his best shot at getting over the hump.

Leipold at #3(Feldman) is warranted...dude is winning at Kansas. And this is after making Buffalo into a G5 powerhouse before he left there. It would be interesting to see what he could do with a program like a Texas or Oklahoma if he ever gets that shot before retiring.

Ryan Day is the Mike McCarthy of CFB: always a great regular season, but never great when it matters. And he was handed a power house program ready to dominate the CFP landscape.
