That is incorrect. He was alleged to have made a payment to someone “believed to be associated with a player.“ That person was never going to cooperate with the NCAA, they could never prove that case in the IARP process. The violations were not ultimately issued on that allegation.
If it would’ve been a payment to a recruit’s mom, that would’ve been sufficient information to find a violation. The IARP did not find a violation on that ground, which means it was not a payment to a relative. Instead, it was a payment to someone “believed” to be connected to the player.
FYI. That is how it was done pre NIL. You paid a handler, the NCAA can never prove that the handler was receiving the money on behalf of the player, and the NCAA had no way to compel the handler to cooperate in an NCAA investigation.

I think you’re conflating two different things. There was an allegation that he paid Javonte Smarts grandmother but that was investigated and cleared. He was sanctioned for paying extortion money to an ex players ex fiancé. That’s the “wife’s checkbook” payment everybody assumes was to a player.

Maybe so. But the allegation was similar. And it took years for the investigation to finish, so who knows...
They did find that he paid a player's fiance though. That was dumb because when things went bad with the relationship I guess, she tried to blackmail Wade with threatening to expose the payments without more payments being made and she had the texts from Wade saying about how he thought they were through after the last money transfer. I like Wade as a coach, but that was just dumb. You can't dispute clear text evidence like that.

Ex fiancé and her threats were about incoming guys not her ex who was an outgoing player. Nothing came from her in terms of the IARP finding her threats to be credible.
