QB Alan Risher played with a bad case of the flu and was not his usual self. It was a hell of a game. That was my Sr Year at LSU. Its a far cry now with players skipping bowl games as it was then when they played no matter what.

The 85 Liberty Bowl is now the stuff of legends. That is a team that did not want to be there at all. I mean, it is Memphis. Hard to blame them.

The irony is, 10 years later the fanbase and team is jacked up out of their minds to get to play a bowl game in freaking Shreveport.

I will never understand what he DID care about. It sure was not recruiting!

CharlesLSU is somewhere. He knows the 85 Liberty Bowl stories. My favorite is the team showing up at the stadium for wall thrus and the stadium was fricking locked. so they did it out in the parking lot. Nicky Hazard jumped up on some car and yelled "Merry fricking Christmas!"

Bill Arnsparger is who single-handedly set LSU football back a decade when he recommended Mike Archer as his replacement. And then he grabbed SOS.

I'm not sure why he ever left the NFL, he didn't seem to give a shite about anything about the college football scene except the coaching

I can remember so many people being so hyped for that first Sugar Bowl he went to, as we hadn't been to one in nearly 20 years.

And he just flat out didn't give two shits.

Bill Arnsparger led to the dark days of the early 90s and was directly responsible for Florida, not LSU, hiring the old ball coach. Arnsparger should be a bad word around here

Arnsparger lost to Miami of Ohio when LSU was ranked 5th in the country.

He was no hero of mine.

He was quite a crappy good coach. Knew defense and schemes very well. Ran the 3-4 and ran it with studs. Hill, Brooks, Caston, sancho, Hazard, Ausberry, Harmon, Lawrence...great havoc givers. Had stud NT in Henry Thomas. Stuffed the run and rushed any passers.

Aside from that he knew shite and that 86 team should have beaten Miami OH and Ole Miss. They could have possibly played in the Fiesta. That team was insanely good.

He will NEVER be honored at LSU.

While I am still alive*

Seemed much worse than 21-7

I remember that night well. The game had a surreal feel to it, as LSU was a strong 9-1-1 team, and yet after a first quarter punt return TD by Norman Jefferson did nothing offensively the whole game. It seemed like the Tigers never had the ball in the 2nd half as the underdog Bears went on long time consuming drives. Even in the 4th quarter with LSU trailing 7-13 you got the feeling the game was hopelessly lost.

The Bears ran for about 430 yards and used 2 QBs, one of whom was Cody carlson.

Bill coached his last season with the Fla AD position in his back pocket.

Really that 28-10 Nebraska game in 1985 wasn't a rout. LSU led 10-0 and were dominating the Huskers throughout the first half. Then Ronnie Lewis started missing FGs and the air seemed to go out after the second miss. The Tigers trailed 14-10 4th quarter and gave up two TDs late.

I liked Steve Rehage. Not as talented as the other guys you mentioned but he was a baller and gave 100% effort every down (unfortunately sometimes too aggressive, like the hold on 4th-and-18 which directly allowed Alabama to convert and score a tying TD in 1985).

Yep. He felt the same about recruiting. Please stop canonizing this guy.
