Dude absolutely did not give a shite about bowl games. He told the team they could show up to the Sugar Bowl at their leisure and most of them spent the week whooping it up in the Quarter all night every night until game day.

The results showed.

He was a hell of a coach otherwise and I have no doubt he would have had a different approach if a NC were on the line with any he had been to.

I always heard crazy stuff about the '85 Liberty Bowl.Players drove their own cars --which I don't know about today, but that was not uncommon then. And how they had Christmas dinner at a fast food place or some such thing.

And, Baylor destroyed us that night. Seemed much worse than 21-7.

Yeah, that was probably worse than the two Nebraska Sugar Bowl games. He had an awesome team, with the Dalton-James Gang senior season, along with Eric Martin really coming along as a receiver, and they get curbstomped by freaking Baylor.

Not to mention getting a beat-down by Baylor in the '85 Liberty Bowl. Brer Bill was Owen Three in bowl games.

Bowl games have been exhibitions since their existence. For a small amount of time during the Bowl Coalition et al a couple mattered, but otherwise they've been good experiences and entertainment more than anything else.

They're a nice cherry on top of season, and the success of that regular season determines the quality of said cherry.

I can remember so many people being so hyped for that first Sugar Bowl he went to, as we hadn't been to one in nearly 20 years.

And he just flat out didn't give two shits.

That was Stovall's team. They played their asses off and should have won.

1980 7-4
1981 3-7-1
1982 8-3-1
1983 4-7 (0-6 in the SEC)

Throughout LSU's football history, Arnsparger and Napoleon Jr. were the only times where LSU had a clear and deifnitive edge in coaching.

I could have sworn I read that somewhere too...maybe Brodhead's book. I don't recall now.

I was at that Liberty Bowl game and I've heard the stories.

13 punts against Baylor???

Norman Jefferson punt return was the only score.

That score was not indicative of the beatdown we received in that game

Broderick Thomas absolutely owned us that day

We actually outgained Nebraska in the sugar bowl at the end of the 1984 season. The 4 picks by Wickersham were what got us beaten for the most part. The missed FG after taking the points off the board at the end of the first half created a momentum swing from which we never recovered.

ETA: I just looked it up. I was wrong: we were outgained by about 20 yards.

Outgained them 291 to 141 in the first half.

Yes, a true trailblazer who denied Steve Spurrier an interview to be LSU's head coach but Arnsparger then left and went to U of Florida and hired Steve Spurrier.

"Dude absolutely did not give a shite about bowl games"

I wish someone would have filled me in on this in 1985. I went to that Liberty Bowl and the second Nebraska Sugar Bowl. Ouch!! The Gator Bowl win over South Carolina was the only Bowl victory of my college career. I squeezed an extra semester before graduation only to see Hodson drop the Hall of Fame Bowl to Syracuse in 1989. That welcomed in the death of LSU football for a bit.

I know players from this time and this is absolutely correct.

Wish I knew this when I was a kid watching. LOL

I was 9 years old literally screaming at that damn Baylor game. My dad, who was watching it with me, said "I don't know why you care so much. It looks like the players don't and aren't trying. Just quit watching it".

That last sentence has stuck with me forever. Sound advice. LOL
