I had them at 9-9 until Vandy won at Arkansas. Now a better shot at 10-8.

I wonder what record last season's team would have with this year's schedule. The bottom of the SEC is absolutely dismal this season.

We weren't dismal last year?

I mean playing the bottom 3 teams in the league the last 3 games gives you plenty of confidence in 10-8.

I say 10-8 is very good improvement over the course of the year, and definitely from last year. We're a couple of close losses from being the 5th seed in the SEC tournament, a game out of a top 4 seed and byes. Nobody expected that. I'm very impressed with how this team fights and hustles. They are a lot better on defense than last year.

I think they beat Vandy and Mizzou but lose to Arkansas

None of them will be easy, but UGA was their biggest test. I’d say 10-8

10-8 would be great, but it's still tough to win on the road...regardless of opponent. Arkansas is where they are because they have been terribly inconsistent. That same team that lost to Vandy won at A&M a few games ago. Most reasonable scenario is LSU splits the two road games and beats Missouri to finish the season. 9-9 in conference play isn't necessarily "good". But it is much, MUCH better than last year.

After the Win at South Carolina, I was hoping they could win out though I expected they would not. Here is how, in my mind, the level of difficulty would stack up from hardest to easiest.

Kentucky (W)
Mississippi St.(L)
@Arkansas
Georgia (W)
@Vanderbilt
Missouri

We have a shot at 10-8 for sure. Winning @ Vandy and @ Arky are no givens, however..

Yes, and the biggest thing I see besides the obvious improvement in our record is we are finishing strong and with momentum.

It has been a long season. We had a lot of new players and it’s a grind. When the going got tough the team kept grinding away and upset done teams. They appear to be building a foundation for the future.

LSU never wins at Vanderbilt. 2020 is proof of that.

You had 8 new players this season. The problem is you will likely have almost (maybe as many) new players next year. Four guys are definitely gone (Wright, Baker, Dean, Hannibal). The average number of transfers OUT in the SEC (and most major conferences) over the last 2-3 years is about 3-4 players per year. Hopefully McMahon can kind of buck the average and retain more than most teams. But it's not unreasonable to think LSU could have anywhere from 6-8 new players new players next season. That's becoming more of the norm in college basketball.

A solid finish would give the PROGRAM some momentum going into the offseason and much more to "sell" to potential transfers/recruits than they had at the same point last season. But it's still likely going to be a significantly new team (maybe more than 50% of the roster being new). Fair or not, that means coaches don't get much of an excuse anymore for having "a lot of new players", because almost all of them have "a lot of new players"

After his first year, there was ZERO QUESTION Wade would have LSU in the tournament.

The hope is McMahon can do the same after his second.

There is no good reason LSU shouldn't be in the tournament 90%+ of the time. We have the second best history in the SEC, we have eight players currently in the NBA (that has to be top 25 among colleges, I haven't researched it), and our all-time team would beat just about anyone.

We're not Georgia or South Carolina. We have a pretty good tradition here when we have the right coach at the helm.

Unfortunately, you're right. We're like 7-33 at bama since I've been a Tiger fan, and we haven't played Vandy as much after the 1992 split into divisions, but we suck there also. I would guess we're somewhere around 9-16 at Vandy since I've been a Tiger.

We'll see how this season ends, but in some respects you can compare this season to Wade's first season at LSU. Wade inherited a 2-16 (SEC record) program mired in apathy. He pieced together the roster, which included a good PG, and went 17-13 (8-10) en route to a NIT birth. In that record he had a good non-conf. win (Michigan) and a tough loss to a mid-major program at home (Stephen F. Austin, though they were a much better team than Nichols). LSU was also blown out by multiple good teams that year (most notably Tennessee, Auburn, Notre Dame) and couldn't win on the road.

Now, McMahon shouldn't get significant credit because he improved from a terrible 2-16 performance the year prior...because it was HIS performance. But you saw some improvement and, ironically, LSU could finish with almost the exact same record.

The big difference, obviously, was that Wade had a big time recruiting class signed for the next season and there wasn't a risk of a guy like Waters transferring to a better program like their would be now. However, Wade didn't have access to over 1,000 transfers who would be immediately eligible like McMahon has now. So while McMahon may not have a similar signing class, he can supplement it in the portal.

In no way, shape, or form am I expecting LSU to make the jump next year like Wade's second team made. But when you break it all down the 17-18 season looks very similar to this season. That season was the baseline jumping off point for Wade. Hopefully in a year we look back and say the same thing for McMahon.

10-8. Nobody wants to see this team come SEC Tournament time. We are on a roll.
