The difference:

Pearson had 12 walks this fall to Stevenson’s 2.

A 110 point different in OBP (.451 vs .340).

Now if Stevenson is far & away the best CF on the team, that could play in his favor mightily.

The first 1-5 of the lineup is going to be absolutely filthy!

Good point. It’s such a freshman mindset to be too aggressive to try and show what you can do. It’s hard to understand that hitting 0.280 and getting on base 0.420 is better than hitting 0.310 and getting on base 0.350.

Yeah, and Pearson is a mature hitter for a college player in general, much less a freshman. Despite the plethora of offensive talent this team has, I think Pearson’s gonna hit his way into the lineup pretty quickly. His lack of defensive flexibility is gonna make it difficult on JJ, but his bat plays, and they’re gonna have to figure it out.

Just reading some tea leaves, it seems like JJ may really like Beloso, and Morgan to CF may be more of a way to get Beloso’s bat in the lineup than anything. I was down on him and didn’t even think he’d make the roster, but it seems like they’ve figured something out, and he may squeeze his way into the lineup and grab some ABs. At least against RHers.

And I think Merrifield’s glove/bat combo is gonna be too good to keep off the field. By SEC play he’ll be at 3B, and Berry will be at DH. I know Berry wants reps in the field for the draft, but if everybody stays healthy, I don’t think there’s any getting away from our best 9 being with Berry at DH.

So Drost Jobert Pearson on the bench? Wow.

CF/RF - Crews
1B - Morgan
3B/DH - Berry
2B/3B - Doughty
LF - Dugas
C/DH - McManus
SS - Thompson

I think those 7 are pretty locked in...

I tend to think Beloso gets the first crack at DH and Drost starts in RF but those 2 spots will likely be a revolving door all season. Milazzo, Merrifield, Jobert, Bianco, DiGiacomo, Pearson, and Stevenson could/will all likely play quite a bit in those 2 spots as well (rotating the defensive positions of course...)

Yeah, no matter what the starting 9 is, there’s always gonna be 3-4 guys that can come off the bench and PH late in a game who can hit it 420 ft to tie it up if you need to. Of course, whoever they’d be pinch-hitting for could already do that anyway, so…

But seriously, there’s gonna be some studs on the bench who can pinch hit, but who are they gonna hit for except Milazzo? Crazy.

I think early in the season, we will be playing 16 or 17 position players. I think we're going to drum some of these scrub teams on the schedule so bad that guys will come out after 4plate appearances and their subs will get another 3.

Maine has no idea whats coming in a few weeks. Well they probably do.

Back in 2019 they opened @ FSU and lost 0-11, 3-16, 1-9 and 5-6 (7 innings)

Alllllllmost took 1

Oh, I definitely agree with this. We’re gonna be playing 5 hour games on the reg pre conference.

Just looking at D1 Baseball's preview of LSU. The line up they have listed won't be our every day line up but it's probably close (I don't think we'll have an "every day" line up).

The only guys in it that haven't hit double digit HRs are Drost, Thompson, and Morgan, all of whom easily could.

We also have Beloso who has in the past.

I think it would be fun to think of how many guys it wouldn't surprise you if they hit 10+ HRs. It's different than how many you think will, but how many could and you wouldn't be surprised by it.
I
think I'm at 13 guys. I'd be fricking floored if we had 13 guys hit 10+ HRs, but I mean individually I think with enough at bats we have probably 13 guys that could reach 10+ without shocking me.

I got a notification about an hour ago that their ranking podcast is up. I'll prob check that out tomorrow.

ETA: Morgan can send em. He shortened wayyyyy up last year. I think if they hit him in the 6 hole, his power numbers pop. I know everyone loves him at the leadoff spot but you can hit Doughty there (and open up Morgan's swing) - Doughty could hit 10+ homers on accident. And, Morgan could be your safety blanket before getting to that somewhat mystery bottom third of the order.

I like Morgan in the 2-hole. I always like lefties there, especially ones that can get on base. Crews leads off with a double or a single/walk and steals 2nd, then you’ve got a lefty who can get him over to 3rd without giving himself up. And if Crews leads off with a bomb, then Morgan becomes a defacto 2nd lead off guy.

Johnson made some comments at the Rotary function that I think confirmed what many of us have thought for a while as far as approach is concerned. Being more selective is going to lead to more HRs and XBH, even from some people where it may not be expected or people that may have been written off previously.
