I’m still not convinced crews is best option defensively in cf even though he played there most of fall

Biggest questions are

C McManus after the fall he had, deserves nod.

DH- CJJ has hyped up Beloso a bit, I lean to him if we are talking who gets first crack opening night only.

If Milazzo starts at C, then McManus should DH

RF- I’m leaning Drost. I think Pearson showed a ton this fall but I’m not sure he’s ready to play in the field.

We don't have a ton of options at CF. Gio is a true Centerfielder and then there is Crews, Stevenson and Bianco. Crews is the only one of those four that could start, so he is CF almost by default.

I think RF is a battle between Drost and Pearson. I'm not sure who wins that but I did read some glowing reviews about Pearson lately on D1baseball. "strong hands and electric wrists" "lifts the ball to all fields with majestically high shots that will threatening to SEC pitching staffs for the coming years".

They also mentioned Berry as the best player to switch teams in 20 years.

I definitely see McManus in the DH role when not catching. I think they are going to have problems keeping Merrifield out the lineup.

The obvious and bigger concern is going to be pitching. I realize they are going to give Fontenot a chance to start, but I think come SEC play, he will be in the bullpen. I expect Hilliard to be a starter most of the season. I think he would be great in the Sunday role.

I can't do this yet. I'm not sure who will even be healthy on opening night.

I agree with you. As great as Crews is as a hitter He was not a good defensive outfielder last year.

He very well could have improved on that going into this season and if so him in center is probably the best thing for this team.

It would be nice to have the option to move Berry from 3B to DH late in games when needed but rules won't allow it.

Honestly that position itself will shift a couple positions if and when a change is made.

C - McManus
1B - Morgan
2nd - Doughty
SS - Thompson
3rd - Berry
LF - Dugas
CF - Bianco
RF - Crews
DH - Crapshoot

I think Johnson gives veteran players the opportunity to start until they prove they can’t. It’ll be interesting to see how Gio, Beloso, Bianco, and Millazo factor in.

Curious why you would have McManus batting 8? He’s one of the best power bats on the team and pretty sure he led the team in HR’s this fall.

It's crazy to think that Beloso, who was one of our better hitters his freshman year, and Gio who has been up there among the highest BAs when healthy, will both have an extremely difficult time getting onto the field.

I expect the best offense in the country. How far we go will depend on how pitching comes along.

Pearson can absolutely rake. I don’t know if he’s a RF though as far as I’ve never seen him with a holy crap cannon. I think he’d be better in LF. Crews is the one with the gun.

The problem with Gio has not been his average, it’s his strikeouts. He has one of the highest strikeout rates on the team the last 2 years. You can’t have that from one of your “lead off” type hitters. There are times when you absolutely have to put the ball in play I.e. man on 3rd with less than 2 outs, and he has failed to do that. That’s why he’s not considered one of our everyday starters.
