Wasnt he referring to Collins when he said this? He’s been really really good and Jay has spoken very highly of him. Kid had to grind to get to where he is now and I think he’s reaching the potential that Jay saw when he recruited him.
In his interview with DandyDon, he listed his 6 frontline pitchers (Skenes, Hurd, Floyd, Taylor, Shores and Little). He said the weekend and midweek starters would come from that group with whoever didn’t start first in line to assume the backend role in the bullpen. That suggests to me that the closer role will be filled by Taylor, Floyd or Little (or some combination of the three). He spoke highly of Collins, Cooper and Ackenhausen as well, so it’s possible they could be in the mix depending on how the starters shake out.

If Shores has one/two more pitches that he can locate I see him becoming a weekend starter by April.

We're going to actually use a midweek starter rather than an opener? frick. Yes.

At least for the weeks with only one midweek game based on the wording of his response.
“I think the majority of the four-game weeks you’ll see four of those six guys start and the other two pitch prominent roles out of the bullpen.”

I think we only have one week with two midweek games.

We used to have two or possibly three.
Jay likes one weekend to be 4 games to simulate regional possibilities. That takes away one of the two-game midweeks. We also used to skip midweek games during finals week I think. But I don't know if we do that anymore.

I said it before, give me Shores against UT on 2/28.

I like the idea of developing Shores as a midweek starter up until SEC play starts and then going the tandem route on weekends. You need a contingency in place if Hurd or someone else gets hurt and having a 4th starter is a big postseason luxury anyway.
Need to find a guy who can pitch multiple days in a weekend to be a closer. Ideally I think it works out like this Skenes/Collins, Hurd/Shores, Floyd/Little with Taylor as a multiple game per weekend closer. That still leaves us the luxury of saving all our lefties for situational outs.
I'm really excited to see a full season of Floyd being able to throw more than 1 pitch for a strike. I won't be surprised if he's the Saturday guy by the end of the season if Hurd doesn't have the stamina to go as deep

With how injuries can pile up on a pitching staff I’m sure JJ is reminding everyone that they’ll get their chance down the line in very critical moments.

I will melt after the first mention of arm soreness.

Sounds good, but at the same token, you have to pull someone else out. So is he going to better as a freshmen than sophomore Hurd or junior Ty Floyd, or sophomore Grant Taylor?
That is correct. I think he will be better. He has been the best pitcher when looking at the fall and spring combined.
His K numbers aren't super high surprisingly when throwing upper 90s. Getting some weak contact to keep his pitch count down is a nice quality to have as a starter.

If I remember correctly, the question was asked about if the closer role has been decided and Jay said he was not ready to answer that question yet. He then went on to say that one of his best arms will be on the back end and that is how he always formed his pitching staffs. Said it obviously wouldn't be Skenes, but could be any of the others and mentioned Taylor, Little, Floyd, Hurd, and Shores.
After all that is when he brought up Collins name in addition. So he wasn't specifically referring to Collins when he said that but he grouped Collins as someone they would take it look at in the role.

Thanks. I remember him talking about Collins in the high leverage situations. And he talked about keeping innings up for second line starters by letting them go long on the weekends too. He never used the word tandem, but it sounded like what he was leaning towards.

He definitely made the comment multiple times that he will not be making as many trips to the mound this season.

Collins closing, with the combo of either Little/Taylor/Shores as a setup who can go multiple innings would be how I play it. But I’m not a coach
Posted on 2/8/23 at 11:32 am to Lester Earl
Could definitely see that being an option. If they go with the starter for 5-6 and the ones you listed to get through 2-3 then Collins if needed. Will be interesting to see how many close game situations happen in the OOC portion with the weak schedule. OF course they will have some because its baseball, but I wonder if they have multiple in one weekend if they would use the same relief multiple times in a weekend like they did last year. I wouldn't expect it. I think that was mostly out of necessity last year and we saw how it took a toll at the end of the season in the regional.

Im more of a fan of the two closers approach for multiple innings if needed. Taylor one day and collins the next day or two depending when needed.
Or even as a stopper in the 7th/8th inning

I like the thought of Taylor finishing for Skenes. You have the big boy to worry about first then the bulldog next.
And, I like the thought of Shores finishing for Floyd. You have a short-arm power pitcher then a rangy power pitcher with some wiggle.
Skenes to Taylor and Floyd to Shores will be really hard to adjust to for hitters, given the huge discrepancy in depth perception because of the height difference.
I think Hurd's day is where you'll see Collins and the rest of the crew. Hurd gives you all kinds of looks to worry about then you can keep them guessing.
