With Baker (who also coached safeties), Olsen and Raymond, that’s a lot of firepower coaching at the safety position.

Hopefully CR can bring the CBs along too.

True, but you can’t convince me last year’s DBs aren’t talented enough to be better than a below 100th unit in the country. They looked lost and were out of position, and didn’t tackle with fundamentals. That’s coaching.

No, but it can develop and improve underperforming talented athletes.

Bad coaching can make players look a lot less talented than they are. I think our DBs could besignificantly more talented than we give them credit for, especially the young ones that should show significant improvement in year two (with good coaching).

Under Raymond our DBs never seem to do well playing zone, even when we had top notch players, but with Baker being more aggressive defensively, we should be in man coverage a lot more. Plus, if our new stud DL coaches can get the pass rush going, the DBs won't have to cover for as long. So, I am somewhat optimistic about LSU's secondary. Sure, we are going to get burned from time to time, but they should be able to make some stops and get off the field on 3rd down.

There isn’t a lack of talent. With good teaching and consequently good understanding, you’ll see some crème rise to the top this year.
I wouldn’t be surprised if we see some guys (young guys) make major improvements.

We have talent at safety. A lot of it is young besides Gilbert and Burns, but lack of talent is not an issue there, especially if they can move Toviano to Safety where he really belongs.

There is no lack of talent in the LSU secondary. Last season there was inexperience partly due to the incredible bad luck of injuries, disease, etc which forced TR FR to be starters. What you can't overcome is your own lack of evaluating player's talent.

Garbage in --> garbage out. The assumption of a lack of talent makes his statement false on its face.

Agree that we have talent there, but we are missing the stud type. A real stud in a position group makes the whole group better. We were missing that guy. The results of last year were so bad that it must have been a combination of coaching and talent. The coaching was bad. A couple of the recruits look promising, but the exact same players from last year would likely play better with the new coaches.

Exactly. If one side of the field is locked down, the rest of the players (and the coach) look a whole lot better. Plus, not many teams have a 1A and 1B WR (like we’ve now had twice), so a lockdown corner can throw an entire offense out of rhythm.

Toviano has flashed, albeit at CB (out of necessity). Think he will develop into an excellent safety
