Arnsparger is also the douche that told LSU to hire someone else over Spurrier and then went to Florida and hired him. He did more to hurt LSU football than any Coach in my lifetime.

Jesus this myth has gotten out of control the power of 20/20 hindsight Arnsparger left after the 1986 season Spurriers coaching experience at that time was in the USFL and as OC at Duke. He was such a hot commodity that besides LSU Alabama Texas and USC all hired someone else while SOS got the Duke job (the ACC back then was more like the AAC today). LSU promoted Arnsparger DC, that was very common back then. I would certainly hope BA recommend a guy he hired.

It wasn’t until 1990 that he hired Spurrier at Florida AFTER SOS had Duke in the top 25. He could have just as easily hired the Florida alum and legend at Florida if he was coaching LSU vs Duke so the idea that he purposely recommended LSU hire someone else so he could hire Spurrier 4 years later is just fan nonsense

quote:

Joe Dean (who should’ve taken the comments with a grain of salt and evaluated Spurrier

Dean wasn’t the AD when that coaching hire was made and again go look at Spurrier’s resume BEFORE 1987. Too many can’t separate what he became from what he had done up to that point which isn’t much

By the way, that particular game was freaking freezing, too, with lots of snow and ice. The university paid to have the entire band and all the cheerleaders hit the mall and buy whatever warm clothing we needed for the game. We bought that mall out of thermals, scarves, gloves, etc. It was still brutal. And Notre Dame still had dudes in kilts with bare legs out there like it was no big deal. Those guys were insane lol.

I was there. It was crazy cold. I did the same thing. All I could score from the mall was some mittens and beanie. Honestly the coldest I've ever been

I was a freshman in 1981 and coach Stovall let the seniors vote on going to Liberty bowl . They declined .

LSU didn't sit out those games. They led in the first half of both of them, and Nebraska's superior depth and strength wore out the Tigers in the 2nd half of both games. Same thing happened in the 1983 Orange Bowl.

To be fair, I'm not sure if Spurrier had yet coached a down of college football when his name came up for the LSU job. When Arsparger hired him for Florida after firing Galen Hall, he already had a resume as the Duke head coach.

Try again homie

It was Independence Bowl, but everything else was accurate. And for some reason back in the 90s those two bowls were easy to mix up.

Arnsparger did care about bowl games and spoke if players’ false emotions leading to those games and he cited that in reference to the Miami of Ohio game as well….

He always prepared his teams but sometimes the players failed to prepare themselves!!!

I also am intrigued by the bowl sponsors paying the players to play. Now their swag bags will have $5,000 in them too. Star players will get paid more but will have minimum on-field snap counts.

Now that we’ve broken the ice on this can of worms you’d think anything and everything is on the table. Bowl sponsors will ask to put their name on the front of the jerseys like in soccer, on their butts like in boxing.

The liberty bowl year he had the team "meet" in Memphis I believe. Meaning players had to get there on their own.

Ruffin Rodrique told a story on the radio about. The team thought they were going to the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii but the admin didn’t want to cover the costs. When it was announced it was Memphis, the team wasn’t exactly excited. So in this case, they actually did “opt out” mentally. The other two Arnsparger bowl losses were to Top 10, roided out Nebraska teams. No shame in those.

Between NIL, the portal, and opt-outs it's just a different era of CFB.

Throw in the ultra soft "look at me" and "self first" generation and college football is destroyed as we knew it.

The NIL intent was to give kids the ability to make some cash while in school and playing ball.

The end result is enticing players to come to your school by outbidding your competitor!

It will get out of hand quick, and hard to reverse, IMO.

That is such a garbage take. You really think Arnsparger knew in Dec of '86 that Florida would be looking for a new coach for the 1990 season?

Arnsparger wanted to make interim coach Gary Darnell full time coach. He basically was forced to hire Spurrier in '90.

Gramps interviewed for the (Florida) A.D. gig during fall practice, after he had interviewed Florida announced that they were not going to continue their search until after the football season was over, and LSU should have indeed fired his arse then as Bob wanted but the BOS stopped him.

Bob could be a loose cannon but he was a smart guy. He knew his football team was being coached by the next (Florida) A.D. imo

That is an excuse for losing.
Kids did not Opt out.
He was a poor coach in bowl games.
The players played to win but kept losing - Nebraska was too physical for the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl under his leadership.

Arnsparger (IMO) wasn't emotionally invested in meaningless bowl games. That's the point.

He was about winning championships. In his world, a bowl game was like playing a game after being eliminated from the (NFL) playoffs. Why?

Just my humble opinion, but I think he introduced a paradigm change of what meant "success." Before him, success was beating rivals (mainly OM and Tulane) and getting a good bowl bid. From then on, it was about winning championships.

LSU-State 1986 - unfortunately no volume.

This was our fist SEC Title since 1970 (a long 16 years). Scroll to the end and notice the celebration. That's what Arnsparger was all about.

FTR, the OP wasn't criticism of Bill. Just an observation.
