Runner on third with one out scores on a fly out to most of the outfield, ground ball to the right area of the infield, wild pitch, passed ball, any base hit. Runner on third forces the defense to make a decision to bring the infield in to stop the run, or stay at normal depth and concede the run.
It also limits the freedom of the pitcher to bury a breaking ball with the threat of conceding a run, vs. simply conceding a base.

So tell me, which one was smarter? Giving up an out with a runner on second and no outs with a bunt to move the guy only 90 feet? Or giving up an out on a bunt to try and score the runner from third and essentially bunting yourself out of the inning?
