re: Are we seeing the last of the "meaningless" bowl games?

What the heck?

If you think about it, in the “old days” only two bowls, maybe one, would decide the national champion (much like playoffs now). All the other bowls were considered “exhibitions” and rewards for the players, maybe a trip to Florida for the fans. I think we will just have to embrace these bowls as glorified spring games which showcase next year’s starters. Kind of like a “futures” baseball game on All-Star weekend. The “meaning” of them will become to see if the 3rd string freshman is any good after practicing for a full year. Is a 7-6 team going to display the trophy for the Cheez-It Bowl in their trophy case?? Prestige just isn’t part of the formula any more.

quote:Bowl season was the shite BEFORE the BCS. That's a big part of what made college football so great.
As much as I like a legitimate winner being crowned through a playoff, bowl season was much more exciting during the BCS era.
The BCS was the beginning of the downward spiral we see college football on now.
oh, and get off my lawn.

The worst part of these "meaningless" bows is the fact that we are forced to watch them. We can't do anything else.

They did that to themselves. In the BCS era (prior to the playoffs) 14 bowl games were added. 11 more since the start of the CFP era. This is why there are so many meaningless games.
The bowls became the NIT once the playoff system was announced. The lack of interest from the players isn't because there are too many.

Yes we are. We need to raise the bar on the participants, .500 record is not appropriate. After the bar is raised create a play in or expanded playoff format, then create a second playoff system for the second tier teams, similar to NIT in college basketball.

Every big change to college football only makes it worse. Bowls started slowly dying with the bcs
^NIT is a good comparison.

Not reading all of this but it’s simple. Bowls pay NIL money and many wont opt out.

Wow!
This is not a good idea. One division can never have 2 champions. Can you imagine the UCFs of the world quietly stating that their national championship is less important that the ‘real’ championship?
The NIT is the epitome of the ‘participation trophy’.

No.
It’s is (relatively) lucrative programming for the TV networks and the conferences share in the money. That’s why we have 35 bowls (or whatever the actual number is). Outside of the long time traditional games the rest are just “made for tv” de facto exhibition games. Only the “true believers” think they are more than that.
It is an opportunity to watch a few more college football games before they go away for a 8 months (even if it is not the highest quality of games). Accept them for what they are, don’t put much stock in the results, and enjoy the last few games of the season

I think the idea of an expanded playoff with either 8 or 12 teams is good. It gives more teams the opportunity to play for a championship, including some of the top G5 teams. It would create some interesting match-ups as well. I was never for expanding like this in the past because I like how the regular season games in college football makes each game more exciting and relevant. But I believe if done right it would still require teams to not have too many blips in their regular season to make the playoff.
Outside the playoff I am fine with having the other bowls but I wish there was more emphasis on creating good match-ups and not sticking to the conference tie-ins as much.

Bowls are great if you’re a college football fan, but I agree they’re WAY too many. As a kid in the 80’s, I remember the bowl games starting later in December with the end-all-be-all of “big bowls” being on Jan 1-2. The closer you got to New Years, the better the bowl. It just seemed a lot more fun. I think there were only like 18 bowl games in the mid to late 80’s so it was a legitimate reward to make a bowl game. It was the season after the season which ran parallel with the holidays so it was great.

It will be a self correcting problem. Bowls, or the addition of all the new ones, are about MONEY.
With so many bowls becoming an after thought for players who care more about themselves then their teams, you aren't getting the same level of competition, therefore the same level of interest, therefore the same level of viewership, therefore less opportunity for ADVERTISING.
No company is going to continue to shell out money for advertising without the viewership, and the fans will give less and less a care and they will simply go away.
We have ended up in a place where "if there isn't an opportunity for a NC, why bother risking my professional career" mentality.
The fix would be to go to a scenario where there is an ultimate prize for everyone in a bowl. Whatever that number of teams and layout is.
And teams that don't make a bowl shouldn't be punished by not having those extra couple of weeks, post departures, of practice either.
