I agree that a coach hire should go beyond a coach having 1good year because he was tied to a star QB like Hallman was with Farve. Instead look into a coach that been hired and his team has shown steady improvement over a few years.
I've come to believe that HC's, at least our HC's, or maybe HC's where the athletes are of high caliber, should either be a former D coach or at least D minded.
The reason I think that is because they don't go into any one game with the idea of an "offensive system"; note different than offensive philosophy (as in, I run the spread system vs. I plan on running the ball, philosophy).
The reason not having a set system (other than the obvious flexibility) is that a D coach is practiced at looking at defenses. Which means he is good at finding defensive weaknesses. Then that coach, once he's identified the weakness(es) of the opposing team will tell his OC attack X,Y,& Z.
I'll use Belichek as an example. He does that. That's why one week you'll see Brady throw 60 times. Next week, he ran the ball 48 times.
I hate to say this, but Danielson said it another way during the MSU v Bama game this Sat: "balance" means being able to take what the defense is giving you on a given play, not run/pass ratio". If you are attacking weakness, always, you automatically are balanced under that definition.

Yes, he was known but after we beat Mich St in the bowl, I don't think people were beating the door down to get him.
Yeah, no one was beating down his door except the New York Giants and Indianapolis Colts

i dont think it is as easy as you think, but Miles has proved that LSU basically will recruit itself. A coach with even a little gameday acumen could & would be wildly successful at LSU

you do realize that Saban was head coach at Michigan State when we hired him. And had been a DC in the NFL. Of course he wasn't the elite coach he is now, but he wasn't an unknown and had a very solid resume when we landed him.

Nope and everyone wents nuts like WTF, he was like our 3rd or 4th pick after everyone else dissed us

Yeah. Dinardo whipped his arse in the 1995 Indy Bowl.

He was known, not only by LSU folks paying attention but by NFL teams. He could have had the Colts or Giants job while still at Michigan State.

I watched college football from way back. I am amused by the people who now say it was a great hire then.

A lot of people heard of Saban before... I swear everyone that makes this statement is under 25

Exactly. Or Miles, or Dinardo? No. LSU has done as much or more for all three guys than they've ever done for us and until we realize this our program will sit in mediocrity.
DiNardo actually came with more hype than Miles.

Not only did most know of Saban, but I remember everyone being happy with his hire as well...

Yea from the Indy bowl

He didn't emerge from nowhwere but we absolutely helped his career as much as he helped our program.
That is one heck of a stretch. LSU had Hallman and Dinardo in succession. Saban took a Michigan State team, on probation, and built them into a winner.
How many SEC Championships had LSU won prior to Saban? It took him about three years to win a BCS Championship.
In the ten yeears prior to Saban we won no SEC Championships. In the eleven years after Saban arrived in BR we played in five and won four. We have not won or even played in the championship since 2011.

Yes, Dinardo's Indy bitch.

Saban was a talented coach at Michigan State. The mere fact that you didn't know about him does not suggest that his career began at LSU.

You must not have watched LSU football prior to 2000.
