Finley had 2 really good games, 1 clunker.
Finley has one really good game, one where he was absolutely lost, and one where he was competent enough.
He’s done well for a true freshman, but those thinking he’s going to overtake Brennan are fooling themselves.

It is definitely not certain that Brennan would beat out Finley come Spring.
Amazing if you think about it, if one were to say on 11/24/17 that by 11/24/20 TJ Finley, who just finished his sophomore year at Ponchatoula HS, would have more game experience as an LSU quarterback than Myles Brennen.

More starts isn't exactly more experience.

I agree. I'm not implying TJF is collectively more experienced, knowledgeable or better, just saying it's amazing to think at this point TJF does have more game experience as LSU's QB

We're not arguing over the third string QB. We're discussing the future of LSU football. No freshman QB shows up on campus and starts from the beginning. Eventually, one of the young guys has to step up and take the lead. He may third string today, but he might be first string next year.

But both 1 and 2 are returning. It's a very long shot that Max beats out both next year. Adding Nussmeier to the mix also doesn't help his odds

It's the same o-line on first and second down when Myles put up those numbers.

You really think Brennan would leave? That's interesting.
There’s a snowballs chance in hell he stays especially being the third string. Nuss is coming in and will be the third string. Once Brennan leaves nuss and TJ will duke it out for #1.
Max Johnson has too much talent to stick around. Just not enough talent to start over a couple other guys. And that’s fine. But he’ll need to improve immensely to get starting spot over TJ.

I don't think you have to worry about that! Other than Stingley and Gilbert I don't think anyone (who likely will return) has secured a starting position with their play this season.
I would put Ricks in that number as well. Other than that, I start spring ball with this statement "all jobs are open and taking applications". Who wants the jobs go earn it.

Its definitely more real game experience when it counts. After the Aggie Game, Finely is going to have that 4-3 and it could be 7-3 by years end if LSU makes up the UF and Bama games.

I expect we'll see Max play some of those games - after they get out of hand.

More in game experience which to me is 10 times more valuable than practice experience.

He already got put in when Finley shite the bed agains Auburn. I wouldn't think he believes this thing is locked up at all.

Come on, He is a true freshman who will probably redshirt this year. He still finding his way around campus. Give him time.

Ummm.... Nobody is redshirting.. it's a free year.

I just hope he's given a legitimate shot at the job next season. It's not often LSU gets quality QBs, so I would like to see him start a game and show what he can do in a real game situation. If Finley or Brennan beat him out, then so be it.

quote:This notion that they arent give legitimate shots a bad take. He has been given plenty, plenty of time to win the job. He lost it. Finley did more in the eyes of the coaches. Simple as that.

If Finley continues to improve
Has Finley improved? He has played two pretty weak defensive teams, and had a basic offense to manage him. Not knocking him, but I not sure he has proven very much.
Finley and Johnson need to go through a full spring off-season practice, learn a complete offense before any decisions can be made. After watching Burrow last year and how his athletic ability brought the offense to another level, I think Johnson has more of that ability than Finley does. Finley is pretty slow afoot.

Do people really think he is going to overtake brennan?
Posted on 11/24/20 at 7:44 pm to Smell the crawfish
I think Johnson stays at least one more year.
