the same as the lineup everyone agreed upon in threads last week. I think our lineup was already set regardless of what happened today. consistent contributions from freshman this year will all be from the mound imo ...I do think that we will play a lot of different guys during midweek this year because we want to keep the freshman engaged and keep them from jumping in the portal. plus I think we will do well enough in conference and pre conference that we wont have to put such a big emphasis on winning midweek games . we will always try to win midweek but we will play more guys

I’m sure someone has done it already and I’m too lazy on a Sunday to do it myself…what do the numbers look like post draft and how many players do we need to trim to get to 34?

Expected starter/ battling for it

1B Braun/ Santarelli
DH Serna
LF Watters
C Bide
RF Laya
SS Milam
3B Park/ Pearson
CF Wachs/ Davis/ Washington/ Patrick
2B Kerland/ Martinez/ Leow/ Ruckert

* Santarelli is in for corner OF battles + DH... Martinez/ Leow are in for all IF battles

Offensive performance will be the separating factor here. Whoever produces and can handle SEC pitching will stick in the lineup. There's a lot of versatility here and the position alignment can move in a lot of ways based on whose bat Jay wants to squeeze in the lineup.

Nawrocki is a wild card here. He has a great looking swing. My guess is, mostly because we need LHP at the moment, that he'll get looks both ways in the Fall but eventually stick in the bullpen. He could be our next Caasan Evans as a Freshman. Tucker is another guy worth mentioning, but I think landing a spot in the IF next year will be extremely difficult... but the OF won't be much different.

Infield is pretty much set. Kerland, Park, Milam, Braun. Santarelli will get time at 1st and DH as mentioned.

I foresee Watters and Laya holding down 2 out of the 3 spots from the jump. Wachs is good insurance if the young guns take time to catch on. But Washington or Davis will supplant if they can hit in league play.

Having an OF depth of Watters, Laya, Washington, Davis, Wachs, and Patrick is very very nice.

I mostly agree with this, and the vets we brought in and return will get the first looks.

That said, I really believe a Freshman or two will will force their way in with their bat.

Santarelli is the one to watch IMO. He's close to a being a Braun comp... top 1B/ OF in the class from the Midwest, LH hitter and thrower...

Santarelli really moves well for a guy with plus size with a 6.81 60.

The thing about him is that he apparently made waves at an event recently, with 7 exit velos of 114 mph and one touching 119... that's elite, and is part of what pushed Serna into the lineup last season.

There's no telling if he can be like Braun and excel against SEC pitching, and I'm definitely not saying Braun is someone who would be on the outs if he starts. I could see him and Braun locking down 1B and a corner OF spot.

Davis and Washington should be interesting as well, to say the least. With their elite speed (sub 6.4 60s), if they can handle SEC pitching... look out.

100%. I think Santarelli could also end up locking up a corner OF spot.

Wachs is interesting. I think he has + speed and athleticism and could play CF. He's experienced, with 2 very consistent seasons at Tulane, batting around .330 both times with a lot of 2Bs and around 8 HRs. He was far and away their best hitter.

What makes him most intriguing to me is that he had a lot of success against higher level competition. He did well against UCLA, Miss St, and ECU.

We also saw what he did against us... he took a 96 mph fastball from Font, in on his hands, into the RF stands on a rope and had 2 other hits that night.

I guess the question is, can he hit SEC pitching consistently and what do the Freshmen he's up against look like in the Fall?

Laya will be the everyday right fielder. I don't think that spot will be much of a competition.

If Adam’s makes it to campus he will push Braum at first base.

yeah I just posted in another thread about the Italian stallion. dude looks like hes going to be mighty hard to keep off the field . especially if you just watch him hit BP vs watching Braun
and jay loves power ,hes going to be salivating at the potential but Braun is so steady . if an outfielder we brought in through the portal falters at all then its going to be shuffle shuffle and get that dude on the field

Braun was like a top-10 hitter in SEC play. Unless he has a soph slump season, it would take an all-time great level talent to bump him out of the lineup. Not seeing it.

I’m not trying to beat up on Arrambide and Serna, but both of them have to improve defensively. We weren’t even average defensively at that position last year.

I'm sure they'll both take steps towards improvement. Both bats need in the lineup as much as possible.

If defense is still a problem, I thought Yamin did pretty well there... just not the same offensively.
