He’s not going to get many reps as the second guy. Reps are too valuable to take away from the starter, particularly in season. Very good chance he regrets leaving if he is the back up somewhere next season. As for him coming back, that would be a terrible look for everyone involved. He made his decision, now he has to live with it. He’ll wish like hell he would have stayed when we’re winning the next few years.

I don’t think WH expects to go start somewhere next year.

I think he looks at the situation at LSU, sees he’ll be doing the same thing next year he did this year, and figured he’ll just throw his name in the portal and see if something better comes along.

Why not? He’s got nothing to lose. Worst can happen, he loses his scholarship and has to pay in state tuition.

It's petty but I would rather portal shop. You want your QB to have some mental fortitude and be a leader.

Transfer portal after a true freshman year just seems weak asf.

I get the kid didn't want to run scout team again and I never agreed with that decision. I think you have to give a talent like that legitimate coaching and opportunity.

But to quit and leave because of it? That's soft,

That's not what I want from a "leader"

And frankly Nuss looks like he's oozing with potential. I didn't see that in limited time from Walker

Yet the likes of you bashed Nuss for skipping the bowl game last year.

One fricking half nuss has looked like something better than trash and you all want to anoint him. Typical LSU fans

So you don't think Collins, or some walk-on, wouldn't run the scout team next year? I mean, they're going to now.

And be accepted back on the team by Kelly.

I don't think he did himself any favors, waiting until the end of the period to declare. That put the staff in a tight spot. They weren't looking at QBs before, and now you can't get another guy in for spring practice.

If he just "figured he’ll just throw his name in the portal and see if something better comes along" as you put it, he's not committed to the team, after being there a season. If that's the case, he can leave.

I'm curious to see if the NCAA's recent statement for more stringent enforcement regarding multiple transfers has an effect on his decision, specifically having to justify the reason for transferring again for waiver approval (i.e. injury, sexual abuse, mental health, etc.). The possibility of placing himself in another bad situation and the risk involved would definitely be more of a disadvantage following his portal entry.

Mike Scarborough broke the story based upon his connection with the Howard family.

And Mike Scarborough has admitted to lying to his own paying customers. I wouldn't trust anything he says.

I give 0 shits about a quarter back that’s literally done nothing at Lsu. Good luck to him but good riddens

Do not want. He obviously doesn’t think he can beat out Nussmeier (he didn’t even try) so let him go. Bye.

He could have waited until next year and have a full battle with Nuss to see if he could beat him out. If he didn't then he could enter the portal and find himself a good spot and no one would blame him. Him giving up without a fight doesn't look good for him.

Not likely he’ll return. As has been posted elsewhere if Walker stays here he’s likely relegated to 3rd string reps, and losing out on a year of development and possibly meaningful playing time.
If I’m Coach Kelly one of my biggest concerns at the QB position would be if Daniels had an early season injury like Masson Smith a year ago and Nuss has a season good enough to send him to the NFL. Now you’re headed back to the portal for a veteran QB, and here we go again.

No. He is afraid he can't compete with Nuss

Now one could argue he should've been #2 but Kelly and Denbrock didn't think so, and that's a whole other discussion.

Who could reasonably argue Howard should be #2 over Nuss?

This is how it plays out if Howard stays at LSU

2023:
-JD5 5th yr senior: starter
-Nuss redshirt Soph: backup with probably more playing
time than 2022
-Howard redshirt freshman

2024:
-Nuss Jr.: starter
-Howard Soph: back up with getting mop up playing time

***if Nuss lights it up he probably declares for the NFL draft

2025:
-Nuss 5th yr Senior: Starter
-Howard Junior: backup but likely getting more playing time/ starter if Nuss goes Pro

***Prior to 2025 is where Howard should actually be looking at transferring

2026:
-Howard 5th yr Senior: Starter

That is the above path for Howard if he stays assuming no major injuries and doesn't get beat out by underclassman.

Frankly, if JD5 doesn't progress in the pass game in 2023 he will likely get injured or even loses the starter job to Nuss as SEC defenses will have better film to defend Daniels.

Apparently, Howard did not want to wait if the 2026 path played out if Nuss was still at LSU for 2025(which I think is a big if).

that’s going to between BK and the Howard

BK convinced Brennan to come back and compete. BK completely understands the benefit of having experienced personnel familiar with the program on board. I do believe BK tries to convince him to stay but ultimately, it's Howard's call. BK and staff let him know where he stands in the lineup, so that may be driving his decision.

Who cares, he’s a 3rd string qb

I realize it’s a different time with the portal, but Ryan Perrilloux waited his time behind Russell and Flynn and would not have started until his 4th year. He was also a better player than Howard. I just don’t understand why these kids are in such a rush now for everything to happen and get to the NFL. The microwave society has totally corrupted the mind of the college athlete to put themselves way ahead of everything else.
