If echols is solid and Thompson locks the right, then curne can be a good backup, and sixth ol.

Mubenga may be one of the smartest kids on the team. He has improved… plus we’re in line to get his 4 star brother, Ben from Buford

Chester and Mubenga just aren’t SEC football players

10+ years ago, neither one would be getting looked at to start. OL used to come in, auto redshirt, and then spend at least one or two years as reserves before getting a shot to start.

We don’t even consider this today because a lot of guys will transfer out rather than hang around to develop and fight for a role. But that said, it may very well be that either could grow into a role as a junior if they do stay. That’s how long it takes some OL to really be ready to start.

I think that’s especially true for Mubenga, as he came here with a lot of athleticism for an IOL, but smallish and very raw. He definitely wasn’t ready to play in the SEC as a redshirt freshman and likely still isn’t. But if he hits the weights and gets stronger and gets the technique down, he could have some upside.

There were way too many instances last season where Chester got pushed back during run plays. Blows my mind that they’ve kept him in first string. Dude is straight arse along with Mubenga.

One single weak link on the OL can hinder the entire offense. Chester was that weak link last season and was one of the main reasons why our run game was so putrid.

Brad is good at recruiting but hasn’t shown he can coach them up. This year will either make him look good or he needs to go.

Both Chester amd Mubenga played better the last few games. Especially Mubenga. I really do believe we are going to have on of the best Dlines in the country this year. I mean top 5 good so the fact that may have struggled a little against Dom and Gooden doesn't concern me as much. But if the freshmen are better they won't hesitate to put them in.

Pretty much this, dude has got to rebound from a disappointing last year with all the NFL talent ruined by a center who was hopeless and the book ends not playing to their potential either.

Now looks like we might have 5 new starters and while no one should expect a great even very good OL, they need to be serviceable to run block some and give Nuss enough time. I dont expect we'll only give up around 1 sack a game like last season, but it cant be 3-4 a game either. Sacks are drive killers typically so having 3-4 a game vs. 1 is a pretty big hit to any offense.

Mubenga really was the one who showed some notable improvement, but he is easy to forgive for even getting thrown out there since he was a backup and had to play due to injury to Dellinger.

Chester had a solid bowl game but thats about, he was consistent below average to bad all season long outside of that. The penalties issue with Chester outside of the general inability to block was even more frustrating. He had 3 penalties the final 3 games of the season and 14 on the entire season. The arkansas game was definitely a low point for him having 3 penalties and a terrible game run blocking. If the coaches believed in him they wouldnt have ran out and got a center to replace him like they did.

but i was hoping he just couldn’t handle the mental load of C

How does it feel to be the biggest fricking idiot in a vast sea of fricking idiots? It’s actually impressive how bad of a poster you are.

That and the technique. Chester is definitely on the tall side for a Center. You want someone with a low center of gravity to help them get leverage quickly after the snap. It’s a lot harder to do that if you are taller. They have a different stance and technique from a Guard, which is often the most straightforward position on an OL.

Chester was a top 15 IOL in his class, so I was hoping the light would come on playing a more natural position for his size and, like you said, without the mental load of making protection calls. But so far, it’s not looking like this has made a big difference. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him passed up, despite his game experience on an OL that doesn’t have much outside of two transfers.

No it’s because we aren’t blind and know Chester is arse and gets his shite pushed in 80% of the time. That’s why Echols needs a shot

really dont understand what they might be hanging onto with Chester, he was terrible all last season at center, try him at guard, sure i get it; but just about every write up on him through the fall has been negative.

To be fair, he was playing out of position last year at center. He's a guard and is now back in his natural role.

That said, I agree that it's probably time to put Echols or Mubenga starting at guard and use Chester as a backup center/guard. Seems like he's had a rough go of it so far this fall camp. I seriously think every practice report I've heard has said he's been struggling in camp at guard. I'm trying to think back and off top, I can't think of one report saying he looked good at guard.

I certainly hope he continues to grind and turns things around on the field and becomes an awesome player for us, whether that's this year or next.

I think his natural role seems to be on the bench. He didn't miss any blocks in 2023.

Did he not coach up two true freshman tackles to become starters back in 2022? Developed one into a top 5 pick & the other into a 3rd round pick?
