I've gone to trashy things that are not my style just to experience them. Biker gatherings, small-town wrestling events, urban after-hours clubs, whatever. It's fun to experience new things, even if they're trashy and sometimes dicey. I don't do it in a judgemental way. It's more of a curiosity thing.
Same reason I went to Angola. I needed to see it, and I was not let down. It's bizarre, trashy, and fun. If you stop to think of it, it's also incredibly sad. There are men there that committed heinous crimes that had real victims, and here I am bartering through a fence with them and watching them get dragged out of the ring after being rag-dolled by a bull as their family cheers on. All the while the warden, who is a character himself, presides over the event like an emperor in the Coliseum. It's mental.

I went 25 years ago and it was very entertaining. I recommend you go and bring the family.

We went a few years back it was a good time. The inmates make stuff to buy. they had a good inmate band. There was traffic but the WFSO does a contraflow type thing so it wasn't terrible and should not be a reason not to go. How this has not been cancelled yet is sort of wild in todays age of cancelling and coddling prisoners but they are volunteers, so I guess that's why. The kids enjoyed it as well

The wife and I went many years ago and had a good time. It was definitely easier getting into the prison than it was leaving to head back home. Th traffic was pretty heavy.
The food offered was good and the inmates did a fair job with the actual rodeo, considering none of them were actually professional cowboys who were on a rodeo circuit.
I don't recall one rider making the time limit on the bull riding event with most being bucked off not long after the chute opened.

It’s been quite some time since I went to the rodeo but what I found interesting is that there is a small housing development on-site for the guards and their families, a baseball field and a 9 hole golf course. All for the staff.
No walls, just fencing. Lots of farmland and surrounded by jungle and the Mississippi River. It would be a 20 mile hike thru some very difficult terrain to reach the highway.
Inmates are divided into different encampments so there is no huge concentration.
They Raise bloodhounds on the premises, used often by the movie industry. There’s a potter’s field for deceased inmates.
Just some odds and ends from my visits to Angola.

Last time I went it looked like they bought a few shipping containers worth of chinese junk and then had the prisoners do a little something to make it look a little hand-made.

I bought a cheap little money clip from this really nice, articulate,40 something year old, unassuming white guy. Just an average Joe in every way. Not a big guy. kinda dumpy or whatever. You know, just a schmuckish dude.
Anyway, he's a lifer, and here's why.
Somewhere around North Central Louisiana, he murdered this Gal. If I remember correctly, he beat her to death with his hands (or so he thought). He wrapped her body up in plastic bags, or some shite like that, and then dumped her in the woods or whatever.
Well, when he dumped her, she wasn't dead yet.
