Angola Prison Rodeo experiences

Hey, I’m considering going to the rodeo for the first time. What time should I leave Baton Rouge to get there? Are there good food vendors on site or should I plan to eat in St. Francisville? Is it still cash only? Any tips? I know traffic leaving it can be a huge pain.

No tips but the prisoners do accept drugs if you get em

Some of those prisoners will give you just the tip in the port a potty.

Excellent way to spend a day. Drive isn't bad from Baton Rouge. Good food from the vendors/prisoners. They are supervised in each booth by CO's. The rodeo itself is legit as close to a modern Roman Coliseum show you will experience

It's a shitty rodeo and trashy as frick. Traffic sucks and 90% of the stuff for sale would be better fit in a 80s Cracker Barrel.
That said, it is a cool cultural event that may one day become a thing of the past. Sort of surreal experience that I think people should experience. If you have negative social opinions about it they may change once you go to the event.
Also, you can find some diamond in the rough crafts you may like. They aren't exactly cheap though.

I went a few years back. Here's some things to know.
The grounds are very well kept. You’ll see that driving in. By looking at it, you would never know that nightmarish things are happening behind those walls.
The rodeo itself is very well organized, and no. None of the participants know what the frick they're doing, but none of them gives a shite. Every single inmate in the rodeo itself is glad to be there.
The food is good. Pro tip. Get the fried chicken.
The arts and crafts are interesting. They also build these incredible bbq grills/smokers.
Buy something from one of the inmates. Here's why....When you get home, you can gooble the inmate who made it for you. You can see what ghoulish crimes that really nice guy who made your wallet committed.

This is my opinion. It's worth it for the experience. I was stone sober, and at one point I thought to myself, "Did someone dose me? This shite is bonkers and can't be real." Then the monkeys riding border collies came out and I lost it.

It’s some of the tastiest food I’ve ever had. Plan on eating on site.
Also, some of the woodworking is incredible. I’ve bought 2 cutting boards from this event over the years and they are holding up really well and are beautiful.
Some people try to haggle prices down, I don’t.

Its been a few years but traffic was always a pain both arriving and leaving. Especially if you stay till the end of the rodeo portion. Its one road in and out but they do a decent job of trying to keep traffic moving.
Food was always great IMO but I like anything on a stick and fried. Its all food trucks and festival style but plenty of options.
Bring cash. Its a maximum security prison so be mindful of what you have in your vehicle and person when going in.
Its a cool experience even driving in. Most people don't realize the size of the Angola property. Its massive and completely isolated between the River and Tunica Hills. Almost like they planned it that way.

If you bring teens, make sure they don't have any airbuds. That and Apple watches are a big no no. I learned that the hard way, having to walk back to my car twice.

We went last year. Fun experience. Not cash only. Be prepared to be stuck in traffic for multiple hours afterward. Think the rodeo ended around 5pm, we did not make it back to Baton Rouge till about 9pm
