burrow was fantastic. we all knew he would be a huge upgrade over what matt had in etling but matt did a great job getting what he did out of a 3rd stringer from purdue and only having 1 legit WR in chark and a weak o line last year as well. we had better talent at Qb and WR this year and supposedly were going to have a beast O line. at least 4 receivers came back with more time on system in dillon, JJ, anderson and sullivan. we picked up giles and then added chase and marshall as freshies. The receiving corps was way better than last years talent wise and they (the returness)did not perform as expected other than JJ. JJ did well. freshies showed promise

I disagree.

I dont think we were pulling any punches vs Ole Miss or Rice.

My thoughts as well.

They were "playing it safe" because O was securing 3 points from CT being automatic from those distances. Problem with that is you're not beating the elite teams trading your fg's for td's by your opponent. A defeatist attitude. O's fear of a turnover is greater than his desire to be aggressive and try to score TDs.

I agree with your post. I would like to see a more "modern" offensive philosophy out of LSU as well.

I still believe our major issue is on the O-line. All you need to do is go back and watch the 4th and 1 vs UCF. Our blocker at the point of attack ended up turning around and staring into the backfield as the back ran past him and somehow drug a tackler for the 1st down. SOOOOO many missed assignments/whiffs/WTFs all year. You cannot play "LSU football" with that quality of play out of your O line. We had a nice season and won some close games because we have a ton of talent. To take the next step we need to get back to being able to run the ball consistently and give the QB time to read/throw. It would also be nice if our big WR's would assert a little dominance and generate some separation.

God I would really hope this isn't the case.

There is a large part of the offense that is max protect, leaving a FB/Hback and TE in to block. Leaving two routes.

So, the first time Steve did this was against Miami. The week after the next game Matt Flynn was saying on the radio that, in the NFL they would have never tried to do that. Hester agreed. Then they spent two segments on all the different things you could do from adjusting protection to quick routes.

End of season, and we are still doing it 1990 Ensminger way.

This is where I start to feel bad for Ensminger. T

Why? The same thing happened to Clemsons OL against Notre Dame. They started screen slant flat passing and Notre Dame backed off.

a lot of teams suffer with the same lackluster line play and DONT WIN 10 games and the Fiesta Bowl. So all in all, Ensminger did pretty good with what he had.

When your defense holds all but 3 teams below 20 pts, you better win 10.

All valid points. Good post.

I think if there is coaching turnover, we should conveniently lose the O Line guy.

Why not go after a Clemson, ND State, Bama O line guy?

Totally agree, Deculus would turn around and watch the play, that's shite you see high school players do sometimes. Next year they better put a premium on prototype OT's, that's what will make your offense dynamic, unpredictable and help you sustain drives.

Because he’s always run the same offense. He added a package or two but he will always default to what he knows. And that’s why we saw PA pass 5-7 step drops against Bama and other good defenses. With a dominant back and a smart qb like Burrow it can be good. I feel good about the offense next season. I just don’t know if it will be good enough to win a championship

The Oline missing assignments is his problem...They miss blocks it’s because his offensive staff aren’t coaching em up.

Over the last four seasons our rushing game declined and our sacks allowed went up.

OL decline is apparent and needs to be fixed.

This coming season will say a lot about the whole offensive strategy.
Yes the OLine was bad. I don’t give coaches a pass on that however. They recruited, coached, and the schemed a game plan for that specific group of players. There’s no GM here. You don’t get to fluff off responsibility.
With that said, maybe this year was too early to tell, so I expect the coaches to either coach up the players to run their plays, find new players who can run their plays, or find plays that their players can run

cons: E was terrible at adjusting. no controlled short pass game when he knew we needed it.
we did run the slant effectively most of the season. however, i agree with your overall point.

DId terrible at using sullivan and andersons size. should have been mixing in back shoulders sideline routes with seams driving down field. also not enough fades to them in RZ
THIS. WHERE WAS THIS ALL SEASON!!!!

people have been drooling over haskins - who throws 75% of his passes 5 or less yards. burrow is better but, e never let burrow throw those short passes out in space to let the playmakers make a play. it just wasn't part of the offense and that's one of my main problems with e. the other is redzone. good grief he had all season to figure that out.

when your o line is struggling, don't drop back, 2 receivers against 5 db's, long developing routes.

also, we were the worst screen pass team of all time.

it's sad to see lsu lose it's smash mouth run identity. i watched the ucf game 3 times and we started to run slightly effectively mid way through the 3rd against a crap defense that had trouble stopping the run against other crap teams. unacceptable.

so, my take is e is serviceable and was hampered by the o line play. enough blame to go around. if o is a good coach, he won't settle for a serviceable buddy and shoddy o line play.

miles lost me in the press conference after the a&m game when he said the offense was fine. if o can't get a top notch oc and fix the blocking (be honest and acknowledge the problem), i'm off the o train.
