I'm nervous that the new OC won't be good enough to appease the negatigers. They'll find flaws in him and expect greatness right away.

But like most people said he can't be worse, so no remorse by any means.

In fact I bet in the short term he's really good. Nobody will have a lot of film on him and know what he can do at LSU. Harder to game plan for. The question for me is can he maintain success? Even after DCs have plenty of time to plan for whatever scheme we end up with?

I do hope we can do better but in no way do I believe that GC is half as bad as he is made out to be.

My reasoning is the QB is the most important piece of an offensive puzzle, right. Did anyone see how JJ played the first half of the year? And I never have bought into the bull about him not being coached as the reason. Throwing balls at peoples feet when they are 20 yards from you has nothing to do with coaching. And if I WERE to believe it was GC fault then I guess he learned how to coach at the end of the season???

Not saying I think he is a great coach just saying that I don't believe it is possible to tell accurately considering what he had to work with.

Can it possibly get much worse?

The offense didn't help us out that much, but it didn't give it away much either.

It could be the same with a bunch of turnovers.

In all likelihood though, no, it probably won't get worse. To your point, there isn't much room for being worse - at least statistically.

I would hope not, I will offer to go and help him pack his things to get him out quicker.

The shaking you see is my inability to contain my excitement, not nervousness.

I thought this was something we all had consensus on.
Hardly. There are many of us who do not purport to be certified experts in coaching college football, but recognize high levels of success and are reluctant to cry for change to a formula that is working (40-12 with an SEC & National Championship since Crowton took over). I was also concerned when Jimbo left (also due to the program's success while he was here), until I heard that we had landed Crowton. If we land someone of comparable or superior expertise, that will reassure me greatly. And I'm sure many will find any suggestion of statistical improvement as validation for demanding his firing. But until we continue winning like we have with the last two OCs, I will have concerns about the loss.

Of course, being me, I will jump on board with whoever we hire and expect the best. Miles has a pretty good track record of hiring assistants (though not perfect, obviously), so I have confidence in him and his choice. And of course I have great confidence in our program!

Good luck, Coach Crowton, and thanks for all the success you helped bring us!

don't sense that at all. There is a lot of sarcasm flying around though. Maybe you're not reading that. The GC fans are few and far in between.

Well I guess some people are nervous about who we get as a replacement.

Who's sounding nervous? Not I (nor anyone else's posts I've read today on the subject of GC leaving). I was concerned about the LSU admins ability to make a good decision on a new head football coaching hire (would they hire someone as good or better?)...and I've not been a big fan of Miles, but I'm willing to concede this point. Gary, on the other hand...how could we do worse? And if we did, how much worse would it be than our current offensive production?

Uh, LSU winning like that had very little to do with offensive success.

Seriously??

This is the greatest thing about Les Miles. He recognizes a problem and fixes it.

I was always a GC supporter. I know his history. He needs a QB with a brain. We haven't had one in a few years.

If Bill Belichick or Urban Meyer or Steve Spurrier or Les Miles or Pete Carroll or someone else with similar credentials were to genuinely tell me such a thing, I would be inclined to accept it. I, on the other hand, am not so much an expert in college football as to believe that I can infallibly discern the positive and negative impacts of every coach's contribution to a particular program. I know that we've had successful teams in the past with what appeared to be unsuccessful offenses. I also know that we've had unsuccessful teams in the past with what appeared to be successful offenses. I also understand that no coach or squad operates in a vacuum. What I do not know -- nor do I believe anyone on this board knows -- is exactly how much positive or negative impact Coach Crowton's participation has had on the overall success of this program the last 4 years.

What I know most of all is that this program has been very successful in the time that he has been here. And I know that change is not always for the best, even when it seems things "can't get any worse". I heard those fateful "can't get any worse" words way back in 1990, when we had gone 5-6 and suffered consecutive losing seasons for the first time in a long time. Over the next 4 years, it most certainly did get worse.

People love to throw stats up to support their "logic" on this board, so here's one for that line of "reasoning": LSU was 45th in the nation in scoring offense. That's better than 75 other teams, including Michigan State, UConn, Georgia Tech, Iowa and a bunch of others. That's 75 ways it could get "any worse".

I learned a long, long time ago that the wisdom of "be careful what you wish for" is rarely more evident than in the hiring and firing of college sports coaches.
