Blame Woodward. The obviously better choice was to hire an experienced coach either out of a job or wanting to move back up to a power 5 job with a chance to prove himself. Give him a short term contract with the chance to keep the job based o n performance. Once the potential sanctions were past, hire that coach long term or go looking without any black marks on the job.
Instead we take a shot on a good coach at a smaller mid major, give a super long term contract, and suffer. Woodward should have known mid major coaches are gambles. No way should his contract should have had such a big buyout after 3 years, much less for many years after that.
Woodward needs to take ownership, find the money, and buyout the current overwhelmed coach.

that’s always possible, but if you’re MM, my would you?
it’s in your contract how much you get, so why would you accept less?

I don’t follow this logic.
I mean all it takes is the right coach. LSU isn’t a mid tier job. It’s a massive brand in the SEC.
Are you implying we should just retain MM and continue to suck bc it’s inevitable?

John Brady had a worse situation with no portal and he didn’t get a 7 year deal

The contract i saw doesn’t have him making 2.8 till his last year of the contract.

10.5 left on the contract.
8.4 buyout

why did you need to give this dude 7 years
Bc due to the pending penalties, no decent coach was going to come here without protecting themselves financially.

Why are we putting multi million dollar buyouts on contracts to mid major coaches in the first place?

so they will agree to them?

IMHO you have at least some verbal agreements in place before showing Mc the door. To put it another way, do you pay $7/$9M and take another risk? No. You minimize that risk by having a top flight guy verbally on board.

I think you’re just looking at the supplemental compensation. You have to add his “base salary” of $400k.

Can easily make up that $1.4 mil difference with a competitive team that can win a couple games in the big dance.
Get rid of him now

I think it was because they didnt know what the punishment would be, so they threw in a few years for a rebuild with a more traditional mindset that it would take 3 years to do.

Just a complete joke of what incompetent coaches everywhere are making. Almost makes you think the AD's are getting a kickback. Just absurd pay for a coach, especially with no proven record .

We can't afford not to fire him. He is burying this program.
They're all
Hopefully that happens before the season is over, like at the next 20 point loss. (Patrick can close it out)..........

It was the only way to convince a coach to come to a team that was facing NCAA sanctions and had zero scholarship players on the roster.
Woodward still needs to answer for these ridiculous contracts.
Now this is bullshite.

You're looking at just the "supplemental compensation" part of his annual pay (which is the bulk of his annual comp). He also has an annual base salary each year of $400K. The buyout language specifies that LSU would owe him 80% of base salary plus supplemental comp.

I actually kind of agree with you. The only reason I can think of that MM might consider a negotiated settlement as a lump sum payment at less than what he's fully owed is if he just didn't want to have to strive to meet the requirement of finding another job that fits the criteria. That maybe he'd just want to have freedom to do what he wants, when he wants, and not have to answer to LSU on it.
But I imagine he'd likely would think he wouldn't have a hard time finding some sort of job, whether coaching at a lower level, or something else that would qualify. If so, I wouldn't settle for less, either.
