Sonny Dykes is a very good football coach. I thought his LaTech were always playing above the level of talent he had. He will make TCU a factor in college football.

He left because he could not physically play football anymore. The guy nearly split his core and never recovered. Forget this summer, why was he in a QB battle with Max Johnson last year? Why quit instead of transfer or just stay at SM? Just put on the spring game and you can see he’s moving like a 15 year vet on his last legs. He never recovered from his injuries in 2020 and there was no way he could play major college football anymore.

You can't always go by what you see in practice alone.

You're right, BK should have looked into the future instead of making a decision based on what he was seeing at practice with his own two eyes. Fire Brian Kelly!

He should have been named the starter after the Spring Game. Instead Daniels was handed the reigns without proving anything.

Myles Brennan would be dead right now with the offensive pass protection. Nuss will grow up and start to see the game slow down as he progresses. He's talented but a bit out of control.

Perhaps he just wasn't very good

He committed to Les in the summer of 2016. Orgeron was named the permanent HC at the end of November, 2016. One of his very first orders of business after getting the permanent job was to push hard to try to get Tua to flip from Alabama. This, despite the fact he already had a QB committed (Brennan) and that going after Tua would likely cause Brennan to rethink his commitment (it did, as Brennan decommitted). This, despite the fact O knew getting Tua was a longshot, at best.

Brennan played meaningful snaps in 2017. First against Syracuse when the game was still not decided. Then again vs. Troy when he was asked to come in and try to save Orgeron/LSU from its most embarrassing loss in nearly 20 years. Etling graduated and Brennan was left as the presumptive starter going into the spring 2018 given that (a) he was the backup in 2017 and (b) actually had some experience. However, following the Spring Orgeron made the move to bring in a 4th year grad transfer who was looking for an opportunity to start...not just "compete" for a job. Remember, this wasn't Joe Burrow Heisman Trophy winner. This was Joe Burrow...guy who had not played a meaningful snap in 3 years of CFB. Certainly someone who had less significant game experience than the guy already on the roster (Brennan). Yet, Burrow was brought in to be the starting QB.

In the spring of 2022 LSU had 3 QBs on the roster. A 6th year senior with 3 games of SEC experience (Brennan) a RS Freshman with some experience (Nussmeier) and a highly rated true freshman. Brennan was going to start and LSU was set at QB, right? Apparently not given Kelly brought in a 3 year starter (Daniels) who I doubt was looking to leave ASU to go sit on the bench elsewhere.

The reality is that multiple coaches, on multiple occasions, seemingly tried to bypass Brennan. If he was thought to be a great QB in 2018 the coaches don't upset the team dynamic by bringing in a completely unproven transfer late in the football calendar when they had their starting QB already set to go. Same applies in 2022. If there was a strong belief Brennan was the obvious starter you don't bring in a transfer looking to paly immediately with limited eligibility remaining.

I don't think it is some great mystery. I think Kelly and Denbrock saw what Orgeron, Ensnminger, etc saw...Brennan was unlikely to be a great QB.

EDT: The great news for Brennan is that he didn't play enough to inevitably be denigrated by LSU fans. Thus, he may someday become the only QB in the US to have his jersey retired despite only starting 3 games if some on the Rant have their way.

Makes sense. More's the pity because I think a healthy Brennan breathes life into the passing game.

I think he was probably told he was 3rd string because he wasn’t the type of QB that Kelly and Denbrock like to use in their system. After he was told that, he probably decided it was a better use of his time to move on with life rather than be a 3rd string QB. I don’t blame him, 2 quarterbacks would have to fail in order for him to even get a shot, which is unlikely.

And just a side note. For the people that don’t understand why some were still hopeful for Brennan, last time we saw him play, he was putting up stats that LSU fans would have died for over the last 20 years. It would be reasonable to assume that he would continue to do the same under improved coaches and offensive system. I don’t get how some people don’t understand that.
