2003 national champs and 1908

But but.... Matt Leinart and Reggie Bush say THEY are the 2003 National Champions.

But the hats & t-shirts USC got on the field said Rose Bowl Champions. The hats & t-shirts LSU got on the field said National Champions. End of story.

I honestly cannot comprehend why we do not claim 1908. It is as a simple as saying "Yes we won the natty in 1908"

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but in the depths of my memory I recall a story about how there were allegations that we were paying players but it was disproven. But because of the stigma at the time we didn't claim it.

It was alleged that LSU used “ringers”, as they were known at the time. Grown men who had played professionally. My problem, is why does the NCAA recognize us as the 1908 National Champions, but LSU does not?

Hell to the no! I was at every game that year, that team was legit!!!

The national championship claim is based upon a group called the National Championship Foundation who met in 1980 and made selections for every season up to 1980. They selected LSU as co-champs 72 years after the fact. This wasn’t about anything happening at the time in 1908. No one in 1908 claimed LSU was the best team in the country.
