There are no scholarships left to award. Finley would only count toward the 85 limit if they had an opening. Actually they don't even have 85 this year due to self imposed penalties.

No such official thing as a preferred walk on,

Every school has a different definition of “PWO”. Some use that to say that it’s a walk on who is guaranteed a scholarship when one comes available (similar to a grayshirt), others use it to say it’s a guy who is just guaranteed a spot on the team as a walk on without having to try out. In this case I think Pig is just guaranteed a spot on the roster but is technically a walk-on

Covid may have modified this somewhat, but here is what it would be under normal circumstances. Before fall classes the fall football camp the roster is limited to 105 athletes. All those not on scholarship (85 max) are preferred walkons. They're invited; they don't have to try out. They're treated exactly the same as the scholarship athletes, except they are not on athletic scholarship. They have full access to all facilities and services, even meals at the nutrition center. After classes start, there is not limit to the roster size. Those walkons are obviously not equal to the preferred walkon.

Coach tells them they don’t have a scholarship for them but they have a roster spot without trying out. Once you are in the building, they compete like any other player. A fair number go on to contribute on special teams.

Good friend of the family was upgraded to full scholarship at Tulane this past year and played a lot of snaps on the DL.

Quinton”Pig”Cage was one of the 16 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award(FCS version of the Heisman)as a freshman so he must be pretty good. Also, I doubt Nicholls processed him like someone was asking. It def sounds like quality depth.

*** best freshman, not overall (thanks Tiger Slipper)***

Nine out of the 10 staffs we spoke with use the “preferred concept” and to those nine, the clear difference between a preferred walk-on versus someone who simply walks-on is that the preferred means he is guaranteed a spot on the 105 man roster day one of camp, while other walk-ons will have to go through tryouts to see if they can earn a spot on the roster.

If this trend can continue it would be good for LSU to keep up with Bama. Get good D1 guys in who are willing to walk on and work up from there. Some may pan out to starters but all can add depth.

His highlight video might as well be an instructional on how to open-field tackle.

There's something to be said about being able to tackle.

Close but not entirely accurate. Pig was one of 16 finalists for the Jerry Rice Award - FCS best freshman. He finished 14th in the voting.

Walter Payton Award is the FCS version of the Heisman, won by Southeastern Louisiana quarterback Cole Kelley.

Huge get? Why do you think that? I just watched his film. He could be special teams player but he ain't covering anybody in the SEC with his speed.
