First off, this really doesn't pass the smell test: Even without digging into it, it seems absurd that we'd be dropping CBs from our class when we have an absolutely DESPERATE need for help at that position.

And it only gets more absurd when you dig in.

For one thing, believing this--that we dropped or pushed these guys out of the class--requires that you also believe that we saw them as the two worst CBs in our class. That's insane to me. Not only were they the two highest-rated CBs in the class, but the gap between them and our lowest-rated guys is HUGE. Even if you put relatively little stock in recruiting ratings/rankings, it's a pretty tough argument to say that two guys around #1000 overall (and ~80th at their position) are likely to combine for more college production/value than two guys around #100 overall (and top ~10 at their position). And even if you put ZERO stock in recruiting ratings/rankings, one of these guys flipped to UGA, who has by far the #1 class in the country and doesn't exactly have room for guys who they don't really believe in. So you'd essentially have to believe that UGA is WAY WAY WAY off in their evaluation of ondre evans. And beyond just UGA, Bates and Evans have overall offer lists that absolutely blow Wallace foster and bernard causey's offer lists out of the goddamn water.

And for another thing, it seems pretty unlikely that we're going to replace both of these losses. If you want to say that we pushed ondre evans out of the class to make room for bernard causey, then i guess there's not much I can tell you--I disagree with you, but if you think we liked causey better then I can't say i know for a fact that you're wrong--but with Bates, it doesn't seem like there's anyone right on the horizon as a replacement. If Bates actually got "purged" like Moscona claims, that means that he got purged for someone else--because there's no way we're booting an elite CB when we desperately need CB unless we have another CB ready to commit. But there's nobody available to fill that gap right now.

Finally: This is, at present, a relatively weak class by LSU standards. I'm not saying it's terrible, or even bad, but we could really stand to add more talent to it. So even if we DO have someone we think is better than Cai Bates ready to join the class... why would we push out one of the best guys in the class to let that other guy join? Why not push out one of the very many lesser guys, instead? I'd rather have more talent and a very slightly imbalanced depth chart than a perfectly balanced depth chart that's less talented overall. Wouldn't you?

Bottom line: this is really tough to believe on about a million different levels.

Billy and Shea essentially said the same thing about Bates on their podcast yesterday. Also mentioned it’s telling he didn’t immediately commit somewhere else.

Agree or disagree, but it does appear Bates was processed.

They said LSU was on the phone with Evans right up until he decommitted, so safe bet we tried to keep him, but not Bates

Actually, it makes more sense than you think considering Harris and Chestnut. If they think they're bringing in another one like them, it makes perfect sense for them to cut bait.

LSU is not in a position to process any defensive players, especially DB's.

You can't complain about depth and having to use the transfer portal every year and simultaneously drop talented high school DB's.

Unless they think Woodland and Causey are more talented and they’re encouraged with the progress of the true freshmen plus Alexander and Johnson returning.

The CB room isn’t as dire going into 2024 as it was going into 23

I dont think anyone can honestly speak to the depth without knowing who will be back next year.

One of Chestnut / Harris could return

Zy Alexander and JK Johnson should be back from injury

Stamps and Toviano appear to be very good players

They are already bringing in 4 corners and a couple of safeties in this class plus you still have guys like Welch and Sage Ryan on campus

Then you add the potential of adding a transfer corner to the roster if the coaches feel like they still need depth

With all that said if they felt like Bates would just be a body and they wanted the spot for someone else i could absolutely see LSU thinking they were in a good enough spot in the secondary to drop a player to make room somewhere else

I believe it on the vastly overrated Bates.

I’m going to trust Lester on this one. Heard he was having a down year.

I don’t believe this whatsoever. Evans is a top 5 CB.

Cutting Evans would actually be worse than losing him in recruiting. If they decided he wasn’t good enough for a scholarship here after dominating their camp and clearly outperforming the most recent commits they took, then there is really no hope for the defensive staff.

Now did he take over because steeples will be gone, or did he just say I want these guys over bates and Evans.

I think this is a given. They passed Simmons on to Jancek while Cain was still on staff. Didn’t make sense since Cain had a great relationship with Simmon and was the best recruiter on the defensive staff. Made sense once Cain left about 2 weeks later. Now they put Hankton on Bussey and Frank makes the call to stop pursuing a DB commit. I think it’s reasonable to assume they are about to at least turn over the 2 secondary coaches.

And he said that the decision to purge was per Frank Wilson’s recruiting strategy. That the two CBs who committed after are per Frank’s strategy. Direct quote “ do you trust Frank’s strategy”.

At the 11:54 mark, He clearly said LSU purged "those players" out of the class.

I listened and he implied both were purged. I just find it hard to believe both were unworthy of a class spot considering our situation.

Scona also got up to wash his dishes or take a dump in the middle of the podcast. He's a strange cat. Seemed like he was really struggling to gather his thoughts during the segment too.

Numbers wise we still aren’t bad. You have toviano and stamps who look like very talented prospects along with guys like JK and Zy…if we bring in a DB, I wonder if we actually try for a big time safety in the portal. BK knows he can more selective at most positions and bring in premier players.

I guess Burns has one more year too…
