We can now evaluate the roster with it being done. How we feeling? Here's what I think the roster layout is gonna look like:

Dedan Thomas
Jalen Reece

Ron Zipper
PJ Carter
Mazi Mosely

Rashad King
Max Mackinnon

Robert Miller
Marquel Sutton
Pablo Tamba
Matt Gilhool

Jalen Reed
Mike Nwoko

Any word on Reed's recovery? You think Zipper starts? He's a nice addition, but is a 22 yr old international that (as far as I can tell) isn't on any NBA draft watch list. Carter probably played against a higher level of competition last season and might be a better option.

I think Tamba will be backing up at the 3 more, or at least I hope.

I really like the 3 point shooting off the bench. And we have good shooting in the starting 5 as well.

Miller's progression and Reed's recovery will be key.

That is not a bad roster. No excuses left.

Israel’s first division is stout. It is full of grown men, almost every team has 5-6 guys who played college in the states. There are former double digit SEC scorers littered throughout that league. Guys like Jared Harper who was All SEC at Auburn, Chris Silva played in the nba and dominated the SEC…just click on a team and you will find dudes who played for P4 teams and were standouts. Hell, Antonio Blakeney is playing in the league. Iverson Molinar, who averaged 17.5ppg in the SEC is on his team averaging 18.8ppg.

This guy is 10000% coming here to start and showcase his talent more. The more I look into this kid the better it gets. This is an exciting add

Another thing to note is next year *when everything works out with McMahon, there’s a possibility that a lot of our pieces come back. Retention will be bigger than our portal gets next year. Our biggest pieces are building blocks and not by accident.

~ Dedan Thomas will be a junior this season

~ Zipper has 4 years

~ Robert Miler will be a sophomore this season

~ Jalen Reed got a medical redshirt and has 2 years left

~Nwoko will be a Junior this season

~The three freshman

This is exactly what we were saying last year at this time. Then Ward opts out. Then, Chest, Miller, Givens, Collins, and Williams all transfer out. Theoretically, LSU could have a roster of:

Reed, Ward, Collins, Williams, Givens, Miller, Miller, Chest, Thomas Jr, the 3 FR, and a few other transfers. I know everyone will shite on that lineup but it would have been siginicatly better than a total rebuild.

That’s def a good argument. From what I’ve heard it was more of a “wanting to start fresh” thing this offseason over a not being able to retain thing. Ward fell down the depth chart after an horrible offseason and felt the coaches lied to him about what his role was gonna be so he didn’t want to “waste” a year of eligibility. The coaches also did not like Chest’s attitude from what I’ve gathered.

Obviously you hate to lose the freshman. Contrary to popular opinion I would’ve loved to keep Givens but it is what it is. The problem wasn’t not being able to pay these guys. Givens would’ve still been here but the staff wasn’t giving him that 1 mil. That’s just absurd.

Yeah, that's crazy. Robert Miller walked into the office because he had an open offer of God knows how much from Indiana. Givens walked into the coach's office empty handed but demanded more $$$ anyway. And Miller finished the year strong. Givens, not so much.

If he can get it, good for him. But that is starter money and he would be putting a ton of pressure on himself.

On a side note I saw an article where the guy from Memphis going to Wade's team and asking for $4m and large minutes at pg.

Yeah that’s an interesting scenario over there. They just picked up Holloman from MSU to play point so don’t know how that will work out

Sounds like we’re done with the portal. Will probably take two walk ons. The focus for the staff is shifting to offseason training and building ‘26 relationships

Besides the quiet month we had before Carter and Zipper it’s been a fun offseason boys.

Was able to build some relationships closer to the program this offseason so I’ll try to share as much as I can with the high school recruiting and other info I have. They don’t want the total number for the roster getting out there but trust me when I say the collective and the admin are all in on getting this program back to where it needs to be. And that’s regardless of whether McMahon ends up working out here or not.

So looking like this probably:

C: Reed (25-30 min), Nwoko (10-15 min), Gilhool (0-5 min)
PF: Sutton (20-25 min), Miller (15-20 min), Tamba (0-5 min)
SF: King (25-30 min), MacKinnon (15-20 min)
SG: Zipper (20-25 min), Carter, (15-20 min), Mosley (0-5 min)
PG: Thomas (30-35 min), Reece (5-10 min)

Zipper the real big question-mark for me, transition for international players is always real to come over here, but he is an older dude at 22-23 next season so hopefully that helps a bit. I know some of those minutes go over a full 40 but thats just how it always works out where some guys dont play in some games or less in some games than others and your minutes get spread up/down a bit different. Just my guess as to how minutes on average may fall for those guys next season.

From a roster point of view, hard to see any excuses for McMahon to not make the tournament. Unless ZIpper is a complete flop year 1 maybe. Thats the main potential hole I see if he doesnt work out. Still, gotta be able to get it done.

Our biggest issue last year was shooting. Way too many 3-4 minute scoring droughts. Some even longer. I believe having an established P5 PG and 2 true talented post up players will help with that. Rebounding also should improve with increase in size. Should be a more enjoyable team to watch and spacing should improve also. Hopefully won't be able to pack the lane defensively due to non shooting bigs and poor shooting guards..

The biggest threat to next year is that either/both Thomas and Reed sustain year-ending injuries. There are replacements to both of them but their absences would significantly hurt the team and could tank the season.

The biggest issue last year was turnovers. That was a big problem before Reed was injured and before the shooting fell off. For the first half - 2/3rds of the season LSU wasn't shooting a terrible FG% overall. They were just constantly taking significantly less shots than their opponents because they were turning the ball over so much. And it wasn't just a Sears issue. LSU has had turnover issues in every season under McMahon. The reason is because the offensive approach has sucked and puts the PG (and everyone else) in tough spots to make plays. It's hard to make a pass when everyone else on the court is standing around and easily guarded. I'm not saying the PG play has been great, but it takes more than one player to be as bad as LSU has been on offense under McMahon. He has to find a better approach or be willing to adjust on the fly during games because SEC coaches have easily figure out the defense and shut it down for the most part.

quote:

Rebounding also should improve with increase in size.

Size alone doesn't make a great rebounding team. It's attitude, toughness and desire. Look no further than Houston. They were one of the best rebounding teams in the country and no one taller than 6'8 played meaningful minutes. Reed was a decent defensive rebounder. Miller didn't like the physicality. Nwoko can rebound, but how long he's on the floor is a question. Everyone else on the roster is unproven at the SEC level. If LSU is going to be a great rebounding team it will have to start with the mindset. McMahon's teams haven't been tough. That's not a recipe for success in the SEC. You have to be willing to get into the fight.

Just like the last 3 years, there IS a path for this team to be good. It is a matter of finding it. That path for this year's team may be different than last years which was different than the team before. For three seasons LSU's approach on both ends of the floor has been the exact same...resulting in poor results. McMahon MUST be quicker and more willing to adjust. Just rolling out the same thing and hoping eventually it will get better isn't going to work. (And before you respond about Reed's injury, just know LSU's offense was inefficient BEFORE he got hurt because of the absurd amount of turnovers)
