We have to get Dedan a high level running mate in the backcourt. We don’t need another center

Also just purely speculation but I think we may give Mackenzie Mgbako a look for that starting 3 spot. Yasir Rosemond played a big part in his recruitment and development at IU

We need potentially elite guys if they’re available regardless of position and he’s one of those.

Somebody mentioned Quarterman as a good example of what Givens could do. I remember Quarterman being terrible at first but he took a huge leap and ended up flirting with the NBA. He became a clutch player. Some freshmen take longer to develop. His biggest weakness was the physicality of the SEC seemed to overwhelm him but he played more physical the last few games and if he can get stronger during offseason I think he can take the next step. Our TO definitely went down the more he played and he’ll also have help with Thomas.

I agree Givens has potential and his skill set translates very well. He’s got good size, good handle, nice looking shot, good athleticism he just tried to do too much sometimes. His biggest issue was shot selection this season but he was a freshman.

Doubt it matters since we have Givens, Reece, and Thomas…but Robert Wright III from Baylor just hit the portal. Big 12 honorable mention as a FR

you don't know that they aren't.

you also said they should get Oumar Ballo and he is out of eligibility and not available. you don't seem to know much.

Jaron Pierre Jr seems to almost be a lock to UK. Would have loved him here. Not sure who our last pieces will be but seems like they may be role types

Jaron is still not committed. He's from New Orleans, and he's ranked the 35th best transfer on 247. He has good size for a SG, and moves well. I think he would be a good addition. He declared for the NBA. I saw that Kentucky has contacted him, but what have you seen that says he is a lock for UK?

Givens looked much better the more time he got. You could tell he got better at driving and passing the ball. Those are things that he can bring into yr two.

I think he will probably get the first shot as the backup point guard

Not gonna lie Chaulkey, and I’d never say this on the rant cause there is a chance I’m wrong, but out of all the freshman last year, I was big on Givens and still believe he can be a really good player. He’s got size and length and he’s got that crafty kinda drive to the rim. I know he needs to get better as a shooter but at times his passing vision showed flashes that he can be a player. The problem I see though is that we seem to want a pg who can score off the pick and the way Mcman runs his offense it might not be a good fit for him. If it were more of a pick and roll with the bigs rather than a pick and pop I think he’d be really good. And if that’s the case Mcman should do the right thing and tell him to transfer to a team that’s geared toward that kinda offense. People shite on our freshman last year and forget that they were just freshman, lots of room to grow and have not put in the muscle or weight that these athletes who are 20-21 years old have.Im going on record here saying I think givens has a chance, regardless what the Trant thinks, if I’m wrong im wrong.

Quarterman was a pretty nice step ahead of Givens as a freshman. They were both about equally bad offensive players, but Givens was a mediocre at best defensive player and Quarterman was really good out the gate on that side of the basketball which is a pretty meaningful difference. Givens also played 2x as much in conference play as Quarterman did so Givens badness if you will got amplified way more. Quarterman was out there 10 or so minutes an SEC game to really try to lock down some guards defensively. Givens was out there 20 minutes an SEC contest because Sears was a joke in conference play, even though Givens was pretty terrible himself, basically just playing to get him experience even if he didnt do anything well really. The only thing Givens could do well was not turn the ball over, and thats basically it.

I get you're trying to say players can get better and I agree, but Givens was most definitely a worse player than Quarterman freshman years. Givens is closest to 2022-2023 Justice Hill here....which is sad for Hill since he was actually a senior

I think it is a bad comparison because TQ is significantly longer and more athletic. However, TQ was TERRIBLE freshman year. He averaged 2 points in 12mpg shooting 26%. We knew he had talent but even defensively he didn’t show much. We are comparing 2 guys who were bad, that’s why they are compared. If anything, Givens played in an extremely harder conference than TQ did with significantly less talent around him

Defense was Quarterman's specialty early on actually and the reason he even got SEC minutes. Was a long 6'5-6'6 defender and had some really nice defensive metrics on that team (Was the best guard in DRtg equivalent to about Shavon Coleman who was a 3/4 type).

Again that was definitely the biggest difference between the 2 (Q-man and Givens). Other than the fact Givens played about twice as many minutes per game in conference play than Quarterman did, which again kind of amplified Givens' badness in comparison. Quarterman was a bad offensive player, flat out, so was Givens, but we had to watch 1 20 minutes a game and the other just 10 minutes a game, and that certainly makes a difference. When you have to watch 1 guy struggle offensively for 20 minutes a game it gets a little more exhausting than watching it for just 10 minutes a game, especially when the 10 minute a game guy adds a lot value defensively and the 20 minute a game guy adds essentially none.

The good news is Givens will probably be at best a 10 minute a game guy here moving forward for next year. He's not going to be asked to run the show for any extended period of time with Dedan Thomas here. Hopefully that means Givens can more focus on doing 1-2 things well rather than everything bad to average.

Just an opinion homie, doesn’t mean I’m right, his size is what I like, and I don’t think it’s out of the realms of possibility for a freshman to improve considering the shite ahow of a team we were last year

lol well that can be said for everyone on the roster the past couple years. All I’m saying is, he’s someone I’d like to see get another shot. And I’m probably wrong, but time will tell so either way I’ll have my answer lol

Is Givens in the Portal? Or is this thread just derailed?
