LSU Basketball '25 Class Update 11/15/24
Wanted to update everyone on Cenac's recruitment since the early signing period has begun. I'm gonna mix in some information from national recruiting analysts for both 247 and On3 as well as just some of the stuff I've been hearing from people closer to the program:
First off it's important to note that all three of our current commits for the '25 class (Reece, Gilhool, and Mosely) have all signed their letters of intent for the early signing period and are locked in with LSU. Regardless of the outcome with Cenac, McMahon has put together yet another solid class for the '25 cycle.
Where LSU Stands With Cenac:
Regarding Cenac, there was a lot of optimism before his visit and there are reports that the visit went pretty well despite the football game and bad performance of our MBB team against Alabama State. Jamie Shaw of On3 reports that there is a big home town appeal and both sides are on the same page when it comes to discussions of NIL. However, he also states that Houston is picking up a lot of ground in his recruitment and is very optimistic.
Travis Branham of 247 confirmed he's hearing the same sort of things in his latest article about the top uncommitted prospects and that "LSU has been slipping" as of late in the recruitment. The three biggest players in this recruitment right now are LSU, Houston, and Tennessee. Shaw feels that Houston is trending the most right now, Tennessee is about in the same position as before, and that LSU is falling a little behind, however it is still too close to call.
You can take with a grain of salt what I've been hearing, as I am no recruiting analyst. However, there is a belief that mom/family is pushing for an LSU commitment while Chris himself may be wavering a little bit and could be thinking about going away from home. It sounds like we've fallen a little behind in the past few days, but we still have an edge being the home team, and a lot of insiders are saying the recruitment is too close to call as of right now.
Timeline for a Commitment/Signing:
The initial belief was that Cenac would wait for the late signing period to make a decision and let his recruitment play out. However, anonymous CBB recruiting insider, Trilly Donovan, has stated that Cenac could be on the brink of making a decision and that we may hear something from him by the end of the week. If Cenac decides to commit elsewhere in the near future, the best case scenario is that he doesn't sign his letter of intent so that we can still work on him until the late signing period. We should get some more information in the coming days, and I'll try to update this thread.

We currently have the nation's 14th-ranked class for On3 and the 8th-ranked class on 247.

What would our ranking be if we got Reece and Cenac?
Seems McMahon has tapped into some NIL.

On3’s Jamie Shaw had an update on Cenac within the last few weeks. It sounds like UK will take a commitment from either Cenac or 5-star PF Caleb Wilson (whichever comes first). I believe Wilson intends to commit during the early signing period too. Just something to monitor.

I don't have a way of calculating for On3, but using the 247 class calculator it would give a class score of 66.38 if we added Reece and Cenac today. Which would be the #1 ranked class in the nation currently. Our current score without those two recruits is 47.97.

And/or he's a really good recruiter...

Cenac would obviously be a huge get. Anyone know why he transferred to Link Academy?

I think I am into this strategy of recruiting guys in the 50-100 ranking range. Allows for stability if CMM can continue to his roster retention success. I LOVED CWW but it was kind of frustrating to have so many 1 and done guys and have to replace the key pieces of your production every year.
CMM seems to be saying "Hey, I'll get the best of that second tier of recruit that will stay in school for 3-5 years." This then allows us to have a solid base to then go get a chris cenac and not have our success be completely tied to whether or not we get him or need to be completely rebuilt when he leaves.
NOW
This is the year we need to see this strategy bare fruit. This is the year where we need to see the base of the team that was recruited year 1 to step up. I believe we have a NCAA tournament level roster on paper. Lets see it on the court.

Idk for sure but it’s like an IMG where a player is going to get the best possible training and coaching.

Yes, Bret, I like this approach as well. I've always loved seeing those teams in the tournament with 3 and 4 year players. And that's what you get from players that stay and learn within the program. Think of Dale Brown teams, Villanova against Georgetown, and Butler. Everyone loves to see them.

Coach Mac has quietly put a good squad together. Got some Monstars on board.

It's not a strategy

All two (2) of them in five years? (Reid and Thomas)

No. He's just doing what every other coach is doing. Trying to get the very best guys he can get to sign. Right now that's in the 50-100 range. That's not bad. But it's not because McMahon doesn't want to sign multiple 5 star players.
EDT: This isn't a post to criticize McMahon's recruiting efforts. I've constantly said that has been the best aspect of the job he's done here. It's just silly to think he's PURPOSELY avoiding the elite talent.

IF (keyword) that is his strategy, I hope he has a solution/plan on how to keep them out of the transfer portal. I admittedly don’t follow basketball as much as football or baseball, but it seems like the sport of basketball deals with its fair share of portal drama. Basically, how do we avoid getting mid tier level players and once developed, keep them from transferring to the basketball schools?

I think LSU is enough of a brand that we can retain talent. So far we have only lost one recruit (Phillips) and that was after year 1 and likely Adam Miller was recruiting him away from on campus.
People have been doomcasting Ward transferring out for 2 years now, and a ton of negative posters were telling us how Chest would leave after being redshirted, despite the redshirt being his choice. So far (knock on wood) CMM has done a better job of retaining talent than most coaches.

3rd year players: (3) Reed, Ward, Fountain
2nd year player: (1) Mike Williams
1st yr: (5) Corey Chest, Robert Miller, Curtis Givens, Vyktorius Miller, 7 footer
Of course Chest might be more of a seasoned player since he was with the team last year. And Collins is a wild card talent.
IMO, next year is the year the team starts the march to the top of the SEC. Especially if we have another solid hs class of 4-5 players.

Seems like it’s the trend with a lot of the top ranked high school kids these days. It’s basically AAU infiltrating high school ball. Basketball players have handlers worse than any other sport who monetize off their backs through shoe deals and scholarships. Whatever they make in NIL, the handler will get a percentage. FWIW, going to Link may be the best thing for LSU as I’m hearing his mother wants him to come back home for college.

The Fantastic Climb to the Top 2.0 is well underway.

Will Wade was able to recruit the 50-100 and sprinkle in 5-stars every year as well. CMM is a much better coach though I think we can all agree on that.
