This is the type of "big" that fits. People would immediately forget about Phillips if he comes to town. I have some friends that taught him at Westlake HS and went to church with him. Going to try to find out how legit the rumors are.

Baker's offensive start to that game was big time though his lack of rebounding and slow defense didn't help Nevada keep that early lead. I think he does fit CMM's desire for a stretch 5 by shooting nearly 36% last year and would take him now that Phillips is gone. My concerns though, take 2 games out including that one and he only shot 26% from 3 last year and isn't great on defense or hitting the boards against teams that don't have SEC big talent or athletes. Graham Ike (hurt this year) destroyed him heads up in 2 games in 2021 (47pts & 26reb to 16pts & 9reb) and the SEC has lots of guys like that. Would need to pair him with a strong traditional 4 to protect the paint, rebound, and score at the rim.

Baker won't make me forget about Phillips. Phillips was coming on, and I think his game against Georgia is what I think he'll deliver much more next year. Phillips is a good rebounder, and he was learning how to play defense. Once he learns how to time blocks without fouling, he'll blow up. He won't be an outside shooter, but I think we'll miss him. Baker is a better offensive player today, but he is not a good rebounder nor great defender, so he'll offset Phillips in some ways, but Phillips could've been a foundational player.

Phillips, played a great game against Georgia and showed signs of improvement throughout the season. Was looking forward to seeing growth in year 2. But I think Baxter would be a huge get, and would fit well here.

He was a true freshman true center, they are rarely ready to go right away. You cant judge everyone based on their 1st season of college.

But he definitely showed promise in the SECT against UGA.

Yohan Traore was a 5-star and barely played this year at Auburn. Colin Castleton played 3 minutes a game at Michigan his freshman year. He's an ALL-SEC talent the past couple years now.

I agree. Phillips will at least be a very nice piece for someone. I honestly think people are dismissing the value of an athletic defensive big. A good rim protector and rebounder can stop an opposing team's run an kill the scoring momentum of an opponent. Phillips was growing into that role. Kavell Bigby-Williams was a valuable piece to the 2019 team. Phillips could have grown into something similar.

Guys getting numbers on a bad team Is like a drug for fans. Guys getting numbers on a bad team, against another bad team, is an even harder eval.

LSU was a shitty rebounding team but UGA was even worse. So yea, he might have looked like Dwight Howard for that .01% of the season’s minutes he played that game.

Phillips had a couple decent games but didn’t get many minutes on a terrible team needing players. That should tell us something.

In regards to the guys McMahon was able to get to LSU I was most excited about picking up 3 top-150 HS guys so late in the game. I felt like the portal guys were not long for LSU, but mixing in the young guys with developmental potential was promising long term. In that sense it’s disappointing to see one of them go. As many of you have mentioned freshmen don’t always show immediate returns, and Phillips did show flashes of becoming a contributing player.

But as many of you have said we’re in a new era of roster management in college sports. The portal and immediate eligibility change the entire dynamic in terms of being able to build and keep a consistent roster, especially in basketball where you’re operating with 12-13 guys. You’re gonna win some and lose some.

The thing with kids today is that tough coaching isn’t accepted well. You hurt a guy’s feelings he’s immediately thinking transfer portal.

And none of this takes into consideration NIL. It’s not 1990 anymore.

This is the major problem with McMahon. He won't change his scheme to fit his players.

Not really. If you watched UConn win the National Championship with 6’9 Sanogo who was a stretch 5 and Karaban who also was a threat from deep you wouldn’t be giving an uninformed opinion like this. No one uses “pure centers” anymore.

He won’t change his scheme to fit his players? We did it in the middle of the year. McMahon has always played with pace, and that was changed in the middle of the year to more of a half court offense built around KJ. What offensive system should we run that’s built around players that can’t make shots and turn the ball over? Oh I have an idea.. Let’s full court press!! We don’t have depth, but who needs it! Let’s get more tired so we can miss even more shots and turn the ball over even more!!

How can people say this? He had 1 game of 13 and 10 followed up by 16 minutes of trash against Vandy. He wasn’t anywhere close to a foundational player, he was setting himself up to be a very solid rotational piece that could come in when we have leads to rebound and play defense.
