Do they have to spend that in certain rounds between 11-20? Or could they try to sign guys at or under slot for 11-19 and then spend all of that 500k in round 20?
1) No.
2) Yes.
It’s entirely discretionary to the team. But they also have a pretty good idea of what sort of money they’re working with live during draft, despite the fact that no one is technically signed to contract by then. In even these late rounds, teams are also going to be in direct contact with some of the more “difficult” players to sign, and have a good idea of what their numbers are to get them on contract.

If all of the undrafted guys made it to campus, it would probably be unprecedented especially when you tie in the transfers.

After a short break, we’re back off and running.
First pick of 16th round is Sam Larson out of Tulane.

There is also no point is continuously passing on players you want to take shots at players no one wanted to pay the first 19 times around

Anthony Murphy selected

Murphy to Nationals.
Will be interesting to do the math on them. He wants to sign, IMO.

Washington didn't take a high school player until round 15, and Murphy was their second one.

Wrong. I missed a few in the early rounds.

That will be the one to follow how it goes, but yeah the rumors of him wanting to sign make it seem like it goes that way

Not trying to be overly positive but is losing him that bad with what we are bringing into the OF? Seem to remember a couple sources saying he would take time to develop

No, you’re spot on

Hey oh..Gavin to the Mets!

I think that gets us to the roster number

If everyone made it to campus, we would have 7 legit draft prospects in the outfield. That really doesn’t make sense… you would almost want to work Patrick more at 3rd base at that point, and that was probably a one and done experiment

Overall from here on out things should be great for this class even if you lose say 3 kids after this we made a haul. And that’s probably worst case scenario. These kids didn’t fall here because they were soft on their numbers and teams could not have gotten them a big number at least a few rounds earlier. They just have to take fliers over random joes. They might even get guys to be talked into going juco for a year and still have their rights and sing them before next years draft.

I think if everyone signs that would put the roster at 39 off the top of my head. I don’t have my spreadsheet to confirm.

Washington Nationals did go light on HS, but 2 of them were in rounds 3 and 4. Limelight on the other is they didn’t draft a college player with zero remaining eligibility until 8th round. Only 2 of their picks in first 10 rounds were players with zero leverage. Those two players combined slot value is $455,000 and can assume both those players will get raked over the coals and almost all of their slot will be re-allocated to others.
Also, some of Washington’s earlier round 11-20 draftees should demand some over slot money (Round 11 - Weston Moss [TAMU, Jr.], Round 12 - Matthew Dallas [Wake, Jr.], Round 15 - Francisco Rivera [Cali HS]). Will be very interesting to follow this one.

Murphy may sign for less if he truly wants to go pro like people say. Especially since he is a DES and the OF is pretty stacked.

I think Cuvet will be below slot.
