Agreed, I always get shite for my redshirt takes .

Even more so with the transfer portal, if LSU has to redshirt a player in baseball, I question if they will ever play. Because if they aren't good enough as Freshmen, Im not sure they are going to plan around these players for the next year. They will just add better players.

Curious to see how the theory works this year for these planned redshirts. They will have to grind out playing time and really come out like gangbusters to earn a spot.

Moffet did pitch against Butler, my bad. Jay never really announces redshirts, so it gets a little confusing.

Lester makes a good point. We went from building a team from good recruiting and development to building a new team every year through the portal. Jay actually said he preferred it the old way but you have to adjust to the times.

It would be foolish to think the portal is not going to change the process in some way. Time will tell but it
is going to be interesting to see how this develops. Will Jay continue to redshirt? Will we start seeing smaller classes with only highly ranked players?

I guess we will see what happens with the freshman that didn't play in 2023.

I’m up for late nights watching UCLA games with you boys next season.

Always good to keep tabs on The Pipeline for The Powerhouse.

it’s a good point but there are guys who have breakout Sophmore years.

didn’t Charlie Condine redshirt?

jay nah go out and get a guy like Tommy White but he also worked hard with a giy like Beloso to make him a damn good college player last year

it’s funny because the whole reason some of these guys are transfering from small schools is because they developed at a different time.

Not sure how recent, but it looks like montgomery recently started following ashton larson, paxton kling, bucknam, tommy white, and even jalen reed on IG

Thats in addition to the several other players he follows on our team. Granted, he follows alot of people

I am not saying they cant ever be good.

But even from a players perspective, if you are Zeb Ruddell for instance, you redshirted last year.

Frey & Kling, also a freshmen, played ahead of you.

Pearson is coming back.

and then Johnson went out & got Mac Bingham.

You are at best the 5th OF going into the off season. That is a tough spot to stick around in if you want to play sooner than later. Considering you have already redshirted and not played at all your 1st year, it takes a special person to grind that out.

as many ups and downs as Beloso has had, he has never really not been a starter. He even started as a freshman. Can't compare him to anyone that redshirted and may not play until year 3.

Should be. His surgery was in spring of last year.

from june 29th

quote:

“I have fully recovered from Tommy John,” said Anderson. “I have not yet pitched in a game, but I have thrown in a couple scrimmages just to get the feel back for pitching.”

At some point there will be some reforms to the transfer portal

Jay is taking advantage of it while it is there.

Dugas is similar. Played his freshman year but dealt with some injuries.

I think people are looking at guys like Dugas and Beloso and trying to compare it to a football player who redshirted/played sparingly his freshman year.

You need guys who are good enough to play their freshman year, but have some sort of negative asset that makes them unattractive to major league scouts. The Dugas's and Beloso's of the world don't grow on trees in that sense.

ETA: over the last 15 or so years, the guys imo that fall into that category are Duplantis, Kramer (to an extent), Katz, Hanover, Austin Nola, Blake Dean, and Milazzo

A good example is Cale Lansville
Didn't pitch much fr year and not sure what was communicated to him before the 2023 season but he ended up going the JUCO route San Jac JC in December 2022 and committed to FSU
Pitched well enough in JUCO 5-3 3.62era in 74.2 innings and got drafted 14th round by Giants and signed
That's options for some of these players buried on the depth chart assuming the JUCO has room and assuming none entered the portal that hasn't been announced yet but it seems we would have heard something had any lsu players entered
I guess most players who want to play for LSU and the highest level are willing to compete in fall baseball to see where they stand and than make that decision

I think that they should have another portal window open after the fall with no restrictions.

I'm pretty sure they do in December. Think is is the first 15 days of December.

Edit: With some quick research I will correct myself. In the December portal window baseball players will not be allowed to play the upcoming season. So there are restrictions and different rules.
