Somebody forgot to tell Raph Rhymes that when he hit over 0.400 leading LSUE to a Natty, then showed up at LSU and hit over 0.400 in the SEC.

Like I originally said, SEC pitching will be a challenge (I've seen it first hand and played for a mid major), but good is good, and Merrifield is solid. Great swing, approach, hand eye coordination, and baseball IQ. I've seen enough to know. Will he hit 0.400? I don't know, but I would be surprised if he did not hit over 0.300, play flawless defense, and be a great teammate, leader, role model, and Tiger.

He doesn’t mean it can’t be done but the step up is huge. LSUE’s numbers are inflated, for every Rhymes there’s 5-10 who didn’t translate well at all.

Merrifield doesn’t even have to hit anywhere close to .400 to be a success, here’s to him filling a hole on the infield and being a solid contributor.

LSUE guys have a history of doing very well at the next level. Only need to look to lead off CF for Dallas Baptist and LF for Vandy.

Do Moller or Jensen have a good shot of grabbing the catching job next season? See no JUCO guys coming in and always tough for a freshman to take that starting role but the whole catcher position this season was a complete disaster at the plate. Milazzo simply cant hit, but did bring great defense. Wondering if these new guys can challenge him defensively somewhat but also bring a bat to the plate.

Jensen has a really good bat, and supposedly Made a bunch of strides defensively. That all makes him less likely to make it to campus, but if he dies id imagine he can start right away unless Milazzo has a Kramer Robertson esque turn around at the plate and is suddenly capable of hitting .250.

Any rub on Travinski? I know he kind of had an injury plagued season but no doubt he can bring a big stick to the plate. Just get the feeling every time he comes up he is looking to jack one out the park. Wasn't sure how much his injuries were holding him back at catcher even before they shut him down.

I’d imagine he will be limited again next year for most of the season, and I feel like he’s a guy that just needs as many reps as possible to develope his bat and defense. He struck out a ton, but brought something to the plate with his power. Not sure if he hangs around or not honestly.

Baseball America updated their 2021 draft rankings today. Ian Moller dropped from 72 to 271 which is good for LSU. Signability concerns must be the reason for the sharp decline. Carter Jensen dropped slightly from 71 to 83, however still projected to be picked in top 3 rounds.

Both players are nationally ranked in the top 10 at their position and should push for the starting job when on campus. And if they don't pan out, guess what? There are two more highly ranked catchers in the 2022 class right behind them.

I’ve seen some reports on Moller that makes it sound like he never should have been rated so high. He’s apparently really inconsistent behind the plate and at the plate. Like Jensen, some question if he’s good enough to stick at catcher, but Jensen has one of the best Hs bats in the class. Moller is seen to be a little below average there.

I'm not too confident on either catcher making it to campus, TBH.

They both have questions that could be answered with some time on campus, Moller with his bat, Jensen with his defense.

But Jensen's bat plays to the point that any org that drafts him probably won't be too concerned about his defense. Moller still probably hits well enough to be a high draft pick. FanGraphs had him as the 70th rated prospect, which would be the 2nd to last day 1 pick.

ETA: I know we were looking at 1 JUCO catcher in Texas, from Hill College, don't remember his name. But he doesn't seem like an impact guy, more of a depth guy.

The portal has a ton of guys, but they aren't listed by position. It was updated on D1 Baseball's site yesterday to show 1700 guys in the portal. It's not really that many though because a bunch of the ones listed were from last summer and spent this past season at JUCO or something.

Our best bet would either be someone not in the portal yet or a JUCO freshman that's not currently committed but may show some promise even in limited opportunities.

Have a coworker that is related to Wyatt Wiatrek from Sinton HS and went to watch him play in the state semis last week at the Disch. He got start, and also got dinged by a pretty good squad that went on to win state. Said he was sitting a 88 for FB during short outing. Wasn't sure how coaching change would impact commit.

Asked him about the catcher who was LSU commit, and he said their catcher was a UT commit (so I thought he flipped). I sent him link in this thread after our convo, and he responded "Oh, that's the backup catcher". Crazy a small school like that has starting catcher committed to UT and backup committed to LSU.

ETA article on game.

I don’t think he’s only the back up catcher. I saw video of him turning a double play from shortstop in one of the playoff games.

Mlb.com released their top 250 draft list and essentially dropped all out commits several spots in the rankings, which is a good sign.

Kudrna is still around 50, Jensen 80 and Moller 120. Still definitely risks but them getting passed up means these guys are hearing more about other prospects, so no late surges in stock.

Can live with Milazzo at catcher but you have to get more production offensively out of DH, SS and 2B to make it work

The draft is now a little less than a month away. In past years it would have already happened. There are only 8 college teams still playing and they will all be done with about 2 weeks to go before the draft.

It's just one more thing that makes this draft season much weirder than normal. I'm wondering if guys playing summer ball might be able to raise their stock a little bit just because they're still playing and able to be seen. This would be more for the later rounds, but it seems like an opportunity for some.

There will be some draft eligible players in summer leagues that could impact their stock for sure
Most of the top jr's are likely not playing summer ball though but it is a weird year with all the redshirt soph out there

That link has Doughty as playing in the cape cod league, but LSU just released the summer league assignments and has him playing in the Florida Collegiate League

naptime said early this year to take Cape League assignments with a grain of salt due to them requiring the vaccine.

Crews and Doughty (Cape) and Drost (Northwoods) are now in Florida when they were previously scheduled elsewhere.

The LSU link had some notable absences on it so I'm still waiting to see if guys like Dugas, Thompson, Money, and Hellmers make it to their scheduled destinations.
