I've always been fascinated with the misses for some reason. How did we let a kid from Opelousas go to Michigan St?
LSU took 4 wr in that class. Hilton, TBJ, Malik and Bech. Coleman was ranked below all of them. He was the 6th highest rated WR in LA and we took 4. We didn't need a 5th.

I bet that could’ve been different if LSU wanted him bad enough.
Well, they didn't, so it wasn't a miss. He also wanted to play both BB and football.

I mean you had two guys go ahead of him in the same draft.

Offered him too late
Correct.

Two WR in that class got drafted higher. We didn’t miss him as much. If he was a DB, I would be upset

I went to Opelousas Catholic at North Central for the 2019 basketball district championship.
Even though OC had Coleman, N. Central beat them something like 97-52. N. Central got him in foul trouble, and they were good enough to compete with anybody in the state that year.
They won state in Class 1A. That was my favorite high school basketball team. Others of note include Edna Karr and Reuben McCall of the mid 1990s and Many HS 1989 Class 2A champs.
ETA I'm kinda partial to Liberty Magnet this past season. That was a squad.

Offering bech over him was insane
The gift of hindsight is wonderful isn't it? Show me one person during Bech's freshman season who was saying it was insane to take him.

Just remember Bech outperformed Coleman his freshman year. Bech 21: 43 rec 489 yards 3 tds Coleman: 21: 7 rec 50 yds 1td.

I’ll never ever fault a kid for wanting to get out of this state and experience a different opportunity

Opelousas Catholic has another highly touted hoops player with offers as a WR. 2026 Roderick Tezeno

Why are we willing to pay massive NIL?
Because they can command it. Before NIL we still had to give whatever perks were common in order to get the Louisiana guys.

It's funny how people here often want to dismiss what comes directly from a person.
This is one example of a larger phenomenon. Many people refuse to accept simple answers even though Occam’s Razor points out that the simplest explanation is almost always the correct one. Instead folks want to posit complex conspiracies, involving thousands of people, that are somehow kept secret, to explain occurrences that are actually much more mundane.
The refs make a bad call? That’s because the SEC office is in Alabama. Osama knocks down the twin towers? The CIA did it. These are the product of anxious minds that are also so egotistical that they can’t help thinking that the world is out to get them.

So, you are saying that Bech was a better fit for that LSU offense than Coleman?
LSU averaged 1 more passing yard a game that MSU. That Michigan State team had Jayden Reed who had over 1,000 yards receiving that year. No one at LSU was close. MSU had 3 receivers with more receiving yards than any LSU receiver.

Remember we are discussing their freshman years. Bech was the leading receiver that year. So you are saying Coleman would have put up better numbers than Bech, Boutte, Jenkins, Palmer, Nabors, BTJ, Deion Smith and Devonta Lee? All of these players had more catches than Coleman. Coleman was 10th on MSU in receptions.
In the end, Coleman has had a better college career than Bech, but it isn't hard to see how Bech might have considered to be the proper choice for that offense.

LSU 34.1 passes per game
Michigan St 30.8 passes per game
LSU 34.2 carries per game
Michigan St 36.8 carries per game
The thing was, Bech was better than Koleman as freshman. Part of it could be due to basketball and part of it could be due to Bech being more polished.

I think he’ll make an impact for ole miss this season. I still think he’s an nfl guy. NFL body for sure. He was physically the most ready to play out of that freshman class.

Hilton was even higher than this - more like top 50-75. IIRC, I think he actually finished the cycle rated higher than BTJ
