This all sounds great. Hopefully, he can also tackle. Some "great" cover corners like Dieon back in the day were awesome at coverage but wouldn't tackle if their life depended on it.

There are very few player on the level of Stingley in terms of raw talent and technique.

You’re right it would suck so much to have a player like HOFer Deion Sanders.

I didn't say Dieon was bad, but HE WOULD NOT TACKLE ANYONE.

Zy's out of eligibility. Stamps / Woodland are pretty good, though and are improving.

Is Pickett and early enrollee? He needs to get in a college S&C program and nutrition plan ASAP. He'll start right away but he needs to add some good weight I think.

Peterson and Stingley were built like college juniors coming out of high school, so this is a bit different. He will start though.

Go look at pictures of Stingley before he got to LSU and then look at Pickett. Not even comparable. Stingley was jacked coming out of HS. Think expecting Pickett to be the #1 corner in the country as a freshman might be setting the kid up for failure.

You're comparing two completely different body types. Stingley is 6' and solid. Pickett is 6'4" and lengthy. That is not an indication of how good they are.

If this is serious it's one of the dumbest things anyone has ever said on this board lol. Stingley was not only the best CB in the country - CLEARLY the best CB in the country - as a true freshman, but he was better than the best CB in the country from probably ~75% of seasons. Again, as a true freshman. I certainly don't take PFF as gospel or anything, but just to give a rough idea of how good Stingley was as a true freshman, PFF's numbers pegged him not only as the most valuable true freshman non-quarterback in the country - they pegged him as the most valuable non-quarterback in the country period (and the 6th most valuable non-QB since PFF has existed). The guys he beat out for that 2019 ranking include jamarr chase (84rec/1780yds/20TD), justin jefferson (111rec/1540yds/18TD), chase young (46 total tackles / 16.5 sacks / 21 TFL), jonathan taylor (2003yds/21TD on >6yds/carry), isaiah simmons (103 total tackles / 16 TFL / 7 sacks / 7 passes defended / 3 INT, and played every single position on the defense besides iDL), jeff okudah (who was considered basically a perfect CB prospect at the time), etc.

If there was anyone--not just pickett, but anyone--in this class who was more likely than not to perform at that level, they'd be ranked ahead of Bryce Underwood with absolutely zero second thought. They would quite literally be one of the greatest prospects of all time.

Pickett is a legitimately elite prospect, and he actually does have all-time type ceiling, but that's not his likeliest outcome, because it's not anyone's likeliest outcome.

The fact that someone downvoted this is legitimately hilarious. Stingley's freshman year tape is legitimately some of the best tape ever from a college CB.

Lol

Already had this discussion. People think - taller = way more upside. They forget that Stingley was considered a perfect prospect and a generational CB recruit.

That said, if he doesn’t have the circus around him for 3 years he could have a better career, since Stingley only actually played a season.

We were watching film of Stingley from his junior year in high school at one of the last bayou bashes. This kid was better than any db we currently had on the LSU team then!

Pump the brakes on the comparison!

He’s the best in this class hands down tho!

I'm not sure he will be as technically sound as Stingley was. DB isn't exactly a role that freshman generally excel in

He’s more like a Patrick Peterson. He’s more physical than Stingley.

Based on 247sports rankings, if his current player grade stands he would be the 10th highest rated CB in 247sports history. Stingley is #6. If looking at Pickett's highest rating, which was in February, he would've been ranked the #8 highest ranked CB sitting just behind #7 Patrick Peterson by .0002 points and #6 Derek Stingley by .0006 points.

Sooooo, yeah... he's really fricking good.

He just started playing corner this year he was originally a safety so I’d temper the comparisons to sting especially considering how much sting contributed his freshman year

Starting him out at safety wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world given how god awful our safeties have been the last few years

I Like the potential of getting that big corner from Florida who can fill the CB1 role if Pickett isn’t ready and if he is then we have 2 big sized corners with some legit talent

O come on

Stingley was all-SEC, 1st team all American as a freshman. 3rd overall draft pick and already in year 3 in the NFL is almost a top 5 CB.

You can't do better than that.

This is as reasonable a statement as you are likely to see on any fan site, much less tRant

Particularly this

quote:

because it's not anyone's likeliest outcome.

A reporter asks this

quote:

I know whenever you recruit guys and you watch film and you know about them and everything, but when they visit you see him for the first time. I'm just curious your reaction the first time you saw DJ Pickett.

Kelly responded with this.

quote:

Yeah, I was. I was surprised by his length.

I mean, people were saying six ' four and you know how that goes, right, You're saying six ' four. I'm like, he's not six four. He's not gonna be six four. He's six four.

And so I think that that at first was a surprise for me that he was actually, you know, watching a guy on film move that way was what really surprised me about him. And then just is his engagement with people. I mean I loved him the. Way he engaged our players, our staff, and never has he been this five star, disconnected.

Guy like hey I've arrived. You know. He has been humble. He has been not about himself.

He's been about wanting to develop to be the best version of DJ Pickett. And that's why. We were in his camp and we're going to do anything possible to make sure he signed here today, which he did because we loved the fact that he was humble in all that he was being told about himself, and that's what stood out.

Earlier when Kelly was breaking down some of the players we picked up that he was specifically excited about.

quote:

DJ Pickett arguably the you know, the number one corner in the country. I don't even know if it's an argument. We believe he's hands down the best corner in the country.

Incredible length at six foot four or one hundred and eighty pounds. You know, I don't know that I've ever felt that there is a lockdown corner, but he's about as close as there's a lockdown corner in the country. It's DJ Pickett, and his offensive film might be as good, if not better, as if you've. Ever watched him.

So this is an elite player that we're excited to have in our roster.
