They just like old school.
I'm sure it's not officially official until the original is mailed.

Signing papers makes for good publicity and it historical significance. All part of the process and won't change anytime soon

Okay, fair enough. Why not scan and email? Or photograph them with your iPhone?
Heck, the NCAA could create a NSD iPad app that allows access only to recruits and they just sign their name right there on the pad and click "Send to XYZ School".

Time issue.
If a kid faxed 2 LOIs to 2 different schools, he HAS to honor the one that was received first.
If email...I can email blast to multiple locations at the same time. Also, there is no set way to back-track what went to whom first.
yeah, i know it can be done forensically, etc. But, phone logs are much simpler

fax method lends itself to more pomp and circumstance.

What did they do before there were fax machines? They HAD to make a change at some point?

That's all fine and good, but how long has the fax been around early 70's? I doubt they were getting faxes before the 80's.

Our office FAX allows me to send the fax to multiple numbers at the same time. Heck, it isn't even connected to a phone line.

You can setup an online portal that allows for only one school to receive the LOI. This isn't that complicated.

A big recruit is worth way more than $60,000

I'll never understand people not understanding this.

In 1994, maybe. But there is nothing preventing them from moving into the 21st century.
I'd put money that the only reason LSU's AD still has a fax machine is for today.

mostly, yes. but in cases someone may not have a functional internet connection or their connection can be periodically unreliable. phone lines are typically very reliable. some vendors also favor fax more than internet, so a fax machine, which costs practically nothing to maintain, is preferred in those cases, as well.
