so with jenkins retiring they are replacing him with LB coach Dennis Johnson. I'm confused on this move. Does this help or hurt our DL recruiting?

Having coach O will always help with DLine recruiting. And then Dennis will just add to that. He’s a fantastic recruiter

he is one of the fastest rising position coaches in the country and he has been learning from one of the best to every coach a dline unit in Jenkins. I think we are lucky to be in this situation.

That and working under Aranda he is learning one key thing... making sure a squad (in this case LBers) are "on the same page" with the other squads. That's especially crucial for the DL. You don't want your DL, for example, all penetrating when the LBs are all flaring to the flanks for zone coverage with a DT QB.

The in-game communication, adjusting technique, call, and coordination can be difficult for a young coach. Aranda is a master at it. He believes it should never happen; hence he takes it on himself to instruct and prepare the other D coaches for it.

He's young and hungry. He was able to learn from Pete so that's surely going to help.

Aranda is the primary LB coach. This actually frees up a spot, should we choose to get a dedicated ST coordinator.

And, for the record, we need to massively increase the size of our shadow staff and shadow recruiting force, particularly if we lose Austin Thomas to Tennessee (sorry if I'm not up on the latest on this).

All of this. If we didn’t promote him, someone would be poaching him shortly.

Check with Semjackass (BRAVEHEART) on this. Without question he does not approve.

This isn't a bad move. He stays on staff to recruit and DL is the ONE spot Ogeron can actually coach if need be. Frees up a spot for another outside coach

O has called him one of the best recruiters on the staff. Plus there is continuity since he is already there.

A rule change coming soon will allow for an extra coach. O has already said that new position is going to ST coach.

That's fine - and I certainly agree with that.

Having said that, if the choice is having a dedicated OLB coach or some other position, it is a no-brainer for me to have a dedicated QB coach, separate and apart from the OC. Our past history with QB development warrants this.

I love Johnson as D line coach, he's young, smart, and played the line as well as learning from some really great defensive coaches. Being young, he should be able to really relate to the recruits. Greg Gilmore said he would probably have transferred if not for Johnson.

Just some gossip associated with the Tennessee stuff - the dumpster fire may kibosh it even if there was something to it. I mean, it's credible - the kid is from Tennessee - family up there, worked there, etc.

DJ is basically an Orgeron protégé, so far his career trajectory is very similar to Ryan Nielsen.

I've seen people post this, but this just doesn't happen. Unless your OC is an OL guy or something like that.

Canada has been a QB coach nearly his whole career. Why would we hire a dedicated QB coach?

The coordinators have to coach a position. There are not enough coaching spots for them not to. Aranda coaches linebackers.

Idk to me Dennis needs more time and LSU needs a big name there. Maybe we need to part ways with the WR coach, save the big hire for that position, and keep Dennis where he is since he has Orgeron for help as well.

Idk if the Canada talk is real but if so I wouldn't mind putting Ensminger back there. I also wouldn't mind seeing Canada's system progress either. It looked to me like Steve had a great feel for the game and always had the defense's on their heels exempt for the bama game.

With an entire offseason to work he could do well IMO. I think if LSU makes that move LSU should go hire a QB guru to help with development though, and let Steve focus on the direction of the offense. This is especially important since our QBs are young.

We need to go get someone who is very good with young QBs. This spot will determine LSUs future. We have the talent, let's not let it pass by. Auburn just proved that Bama can absolutely be beat with a passing QB, which I already knew. People clamoring for DT only QBs are dumb and know nothing about football.

You need a passer first and a guy who can move in the pocket, and sees the field. That's it.
