Can someone explain a non-committable offer to me?

Not exactly lsu recruiting related but I know that many on this board know the ins and outs of recruiting much more than I do.

Backstory: I was reading a tweet about a kid who had an offer from Florida state. Kid took an unofficial visit and committed to fsu. After the kid committed, fsu(not clear how) let the kid know that the offer was a non-committable offer.

If this guy, this guy, and this guy doesn’t commit we would love to have you.

I personally think they’re bullshite and a non-committable offer isn’t a real offer.

I guess the kid maybe got confused with the conversation. That is bs, but it would seem clear that it’s not an offer.

Is that an offer at all? It seems like no. But a quick check of 247 says we have 28 WR offers and 11 QB offers (with Collins committed) so whoever is the 28th WR on the board would not be permitted to commit. That’s gotta be a weird conversation.

“Son, we’d like to offer you a scholarship but we can’t accept a commitment from you right now because we
Have these 10 guys rated ahead of you. But feel free to tweet about it and tell 247 you have an offer.”

It's the nature of the beast that schools have to over offer. They can't accept commitments from the 100+ offers that may be out there. Schools also have preferences as to who they would like to sign, so all offers are conditioned that commitments are subject to head coach acceptance.

The difference between a committable offer and a non-comittable offer is whether a head coach would immediately accept a commitment or not. A Will Campbell will be immediately accepted. A prospect that you like, but is not a slam dunk, may have to wait to see if a spot is available after the class fills out.

From my recruiting experience sometimes it’s to help the kid attract more offers while also keeping in good graces with the recruit if players ahead of him don’t fall through.

A school may have serious interest at a position but is holding out for a better prospect. So, they may say something to drag him along, and say you have an offer, but we won't accept it until all other prospects that grade out higher have either passed or signed elsewhere.

And the coaches usually have a feel for whether or not they need to be upfront about that or not. Sometimes they aren’t, like for this kid at FSU, sometimes they are. I know LSU is usually a little more open about that stuff with La kids because they don’t want to blind side them and burn bridges, but they don’t have to worry about that with OOS kids.

A few years back Myron Warren was being recruited by LSU and was told they were waiting to see what happens with Ish before they were going to offer him. They told him he would have to wait until February to sign. Texas told him he had an offer in the early signing period and they weren’t going to wait until February for him to decide. He took the safe bet and signed with Texas.

“Hey little Johnny, we would love to have you, but we’re not sure of our numbers yet. Hang tight. You’re one of our first calls”.

Now that the 25 limit has gone away, you’ll see NCOs a lot less.

In other words its a "Wait & See" offer. If a team fails to sign the higher rated guy...they would then give the green light to the recruit that had the non-committable offer to fill out the recruiting class. Its a numbers game.

It probably worked out best for the kid. Now he knows not to spent any time and energy visiting there and can check out schools that actually want him.

It's a school putting a kid on the back burner.

A non-committable offer is an offer that alabama gives to a Louisiana kid and the Louisiana kid commits to LSU over alabama. Alabama then states that their offer was non-committable to help with their butthurtness. This is also applicable to all offers given out by Alabama where the recruit decides to not be cheered on by 100,000 married siblings in the stadium. I hope that helps.

The non-commitable offer means the offer is contingent on certain things some of which may or may not be in control of the player. This is akin to making an offer on buying a home contingent on favorable financing, selling your own home, or property passing inspection.
Programs are offering kids in 8th grade now. A lot can happen between then and NSD.
It is not all bad for the recruit. He can claim the offer on his resume and also knows the situation he is dealing with as he makes his decision.

It is like you are wait listed to medical school. They will let you know if a position come open.

NCOs are not contingent solely on class numbers and more highly-rated players.

They can be contingent on grades and other metrics.
