Assessing the context of this class - LSU v Bama

I would wager that Saban has somewhat mixed feelings about what LSU was able to accomplish this cycle. On the one hand, he has to be ecstatic that Bama's efforts to raid LA during LSU's time of extreme uncertainty and turmoil was a smashing success, both for the short term (taking top LA players that LSU coveted) and the long term (strengthening the hold that Bama has in certain areas).
On the other hand, I doubt Saban expected that LSU would be able to keep the top tier players that were committed, or that LSU would be able to pull in top end OOS targets like Chaisson, Tyler and Phillips in key areas of need. Saban likely expected that he would be able to deliver a more significant blow to LSU.
That said, Orgeron faces a long, tough road in the state to mend relationships and convince observers that LSU is a better option than Bama, or at least just as good. Orgeron sent a message that LSU will no longer be out worked, but it will take multiple years of sustaining this effort, as well as having success on the field vs Bama, for LSU to turn the tables (short of Saban abruptly retiring).
Personally, I think he can do it, although some key staff decisions remain, and Orgeron will need to assess whether the status quo arrangement with Jenkins is really going to work from a recruiting standpoint. But this staff seems willing and able to put in the work on the recruiting trail, and you can't help but be optimistic regarding the units Aranda and Canada will be able to field in 2017.

great post. as long as saban is at bama there are several states that are going to lose players, not just La. saban landed 6 guys from florida. right now, Alabama not only fills up, has 12 early enrollees, but was able to GREYSHIRT A 4 STAR. who does that?

I don't think LSU and Orgeron occupy as much space in Saban's head as you think they do.

I feel like Saban had to reach a little deeper in the back pocket for this one. just a hunch

I agree, but Saban definitely covers all bases, and with his Louisiana connections it makes it particularly frustrating as an LSU fan.
If LSU lands 4 of the 5 big name LA misses (Allen, Moses, Buggs, Smith and Mathis), they likely have top 3-4 level class and are right with Bama in perceived talent this year. I think a few of the players that LSU landed in Chaisson, Shelvin, and the trio of safeties and the 3 LBs are all difference makers. LSU just needs the depth and competition to fill in any players who don't cut it and to push the best players to work at the highest level.
I believe in the direction of the LSU program, and think the tables are turning back in LSU's favor with the energy and work O is bringing, and the intelligence and scheme the coordinators are bringing.
Getting better and winning will solve most problems!

Saban got pretty much every player he offered. Doubt he's too worried about any other team.
Luckily he's only able to put 11 on the field at s time and our 11 will be just as talented and now just as well coached.

Fair point, but being able to recruit in Louisiana is a big deal for Saban. Being able to take top players and directly damage one of your divisional rivals is key, particularly important since Saban already has relationships. It was not an accident that Bama tried to heavily raid Louisiana, targeting even more players than normal, during a time when Miles was clearly in trouble after the Alleva show in late 2015, and then continuing with the 2016 upheaval.

1.) We've got to beat them, and SOON.
2.) Orgeron needs to continue signing stud LB's, DL, OL and QB's. Regardless of where they come from.
3.) Top 5, Top 10 classes filled with stud CB's, Safetys, WR's and RB's are fine, but you win in the trenches and with solid QB play.
4.) Our front 7 and OLine/QB play has got to get to Bama's level if we're going to beat them consistently and challenge for the SEC/ playoffs.
5.) Coach Canada needs to deliver. We must get better QB play and have more diversity in our offense going forward.
6.) If we accomplish these things, more and more top-tiered in-state recruits will want to stay home.

This is the way I look at it. Who else does he worry about in th SEC. Who plays them the toughest year in year out. You better believe he worries about us.
Auburn might be th only other school. I'm sure he thinks about us plenty.

Saban said in an interview yesterday that they signed 35 yesterday. That means he had to pull in about 8-10 walkons and greyshirts. When are these people going to realize they are just going into The Process to become processed in a year or two...
Oh, and that 4* greyshirt was the 118th player in the country I believe...

Four of LSU's permenant opponents finished in the top 10. Signing the #7 class in the country is good, but when Bama, Auburn, A&M, and UF also sign top 10 classes, it's easy to see where this team could lose 3 games a year over the next few years.
I'm really hoping LSU can start finishing closer to Bama (in recruiting) than the likes of Auburn, A&M, and UF.

Why do we ALWAYS have to compare EVERYTHING to Bama....
Posted on 2/2/17 at 8:59 am to MOT
Wrong! Just like Bear Bryant used to do, Saban recruits to help himself but also to weaken his major opponents. For instance the "Hootie" Jones decommit, and I suspect the Chris Allen play this year. Two assistant coaches from Louisiana, Burton Burns and Karl Dunbar are more evidence of this.
Doesn't always work though. Arguable, but I think LSU did better at linebacker than Moses and Allen and although I would liked to have gotten Mathis because of the miss on Wilson, he isn't elite. Oh, and IMO Racy McMath > Devonta Smith. I can't believe Saban bumped the DE Parks to keep Devonta Smith. That Louisiana thing, maybe.

Cause they are the gold standard in the same conference and division as LSU. If you don't you are sticking your head in the sand. Gotta beat the best to be the best, and right now Bama is lapping the SEC.
I think UGA and LSU are finding that extra gear with the new energy from coaches and solid recruiting. Bama's going to experience decline with coaching turnover and Saban's military football mind wearing out the process. It started with Kiffin/Clemson loss, and is going to carryover into next year. They just have so much talent right now, its still going to take a YUGE effort to knock them off the top.

On a positive note:
bama may not get a single recruit in the top 50 next year

Ok, Here is how I see it. Kirby whipped Saban's arse in Georgia. Georgia has been Alabama's go to outside of the state of Alabama since Saban got there. Therefore, Saban had to go to other areas. To me, This is a good thing.
Ogeron will recruit the state better and harder next year. We should not have as many deflections since we shouldn't be having as much turnover/coaching changes.
If Kirby takes care of Georgia, Ogeron takes care of louisian. I see the talent pool at Bama not going to be as strong.
As great of ranked class as bama has, I don't think it's as strong as it has been. They are used to getting the marvin Wilson's, Solomon's etc. Now they had to get a mathis. Not that he is a bad player, just not the elite player.
Bama will still be strong. However, UGA has big say so in helping them slip just enough where they can't line up and over power you like they have. The talent gap between lsu and bama really isn't that much. A left tackle here, qb there.
I liked our class. it was well balanced for the first time in a long time.

I think the front 7/defense is equal. The offense was unable to move the ball, so the D stayed on the field way too long. 4th quarter, they were spent.

Bottom line.

I disagree. Saban knows first hand that LSU is a sleeping giant that is best kept asleep. If O figures out a way to awaken it, watch out. I promise you that with the exception of Auburn, Alabama is most concerned with beating LSU. Tennessee some years (if they are decent), but LSU every year.
