dstone12: I think you are missing the Punter Bramlett who is the other specialist that is on scholarship. Mike Jones at LB has the COVID year option and can come back and play in 2023 and as of now plans to come back. He was in the same class for example as Florid State QB Jordan Travis, who signed with Louisville in 2018. COVID year option was exercised by Travis and he is coming back at FSU for a 6th year.
So LSU as of now (that could change after bowl game or spring ball), 50 guys on Scholarship on the 2022 roster that can play in 2023. LSU signed 25 HS players that gets you to 75 plus 7 Portal Transfers gets you to 82.
LSU has room to take 3 more and be at the 85 hard cap. Again, after spring ball, maybe another player or 2 hits the portal and that changes.
So I think unless you can sign a top notch HS player (who is left?), LSU in my view should try to get 3 more guys from the portal that they think can play relevant snaps in 2023 and get those guys in for spring ball. No need to hold those slots. If you lose a player or 2 after spring ball to the portal, LSU can go into the spring portal and find a player or 2 if there are guys that meet what they are looking for.

We’ll lose more than one or two after spring ball. It’s probably more like 4-5. Roster turnover these days is making these coaches earn those millions.

There has been a precedent to the portal but not much.
I could see where in this first window until January, there is still a group of five star guys that wanted to wait until the “black-Friday” rush of entrants waned.
After all the dust has settled and some coaches that weren’t as fortunate will toss nil cash because now they have to.
There might be a second wave in this first window. We have four more weeks, guy. Some blue chips may decide to enter now. Then again. They may not.
