My parents live about 2 miles west of the Tangipahoa River off HWY 190 in Hammond. Can anyone with knowledge of the situation tell me if they should be ok? Talked to my Dad earlier and he is not concerned. He said the flood in 1983 was partially caused by the I-12 construction that was going on at the time. Plus the dam in question is about 45 miles north of them. It is hard for me to fathom Hammond being affected even in a worse case scenario.

Will be fine. wwwltv.com has Jindal live presser. From what I understood the mandatory evac is a half mile around the dam.

That is incorrect. They have a mandatory evacuation for Kentwood, Tangiophoa, Roseland, Amite, Independence, Loranger, and Robert. All areas along the Tangipohoa river. A mile on each side of the river.

They began a controlled breach about an hour ago, the threat should be lowered

Where did you hear that? I heard it too but wasn't sure if it was true

Getting updates from local officials
Coast guard and Army corps is there as well. They brought in some equipment from Natchez to help with pumping water out

Did it collapse?
Friend just texted me and said her friend's husband that is a first responder type or something just got called to work a dam collapse. Probably just getting hands on deck just in case, right?

That lake's not that big. How could a dam failure possibly affect that large a swath of the state?

Some of my in-laws in Northern Miss said they heard that part of I-55 and Hwy 51 would be closed in Miss and La. Does anybody know if this is true? I cannot find anything that says that.

I think they misheard.

The biggest threat here is the millions of empty bottles along the bottom of the river thrown in by drunken redneck tubers for the last thirty plus years will come flying down river at warp speed, an enormous deathshheet of glass...

That's what I think, too.

When I read the type-o in the thread title, for some reason I hear it in Madea's voice in my head.
