Anyone have anything bad to say about it? Everything I read is good and it seems too good to be true.

Thinking of Hydroseeding my yard with zoysia. I want something nice, but don't want to put a bunch of time playing with it. Only a 1 or 2 a year treatment and cut / water accordingly.

Also, if you have it, what do you cut with? Regular rotary lawnmower?

I have 50/50 zoysia Bermuda yard. The zoysia is slowly overtaking the Bermuda which is my goal. I love it. Looks great, wonderful to walk on barefoot. Does good in the shade. I cut with a regular John Deere riding mower on the highest deck setting

Did you start seeding zoysia in an already existing bermuda yard? Or did you throw both seeds together?

The only thing with mine is that if it doesnt get rain for awhile I have to water it. It seems to die back quicker then my centipede. Other than that I grows super thick if it watered properly. Just my experience.

Very susceptible to pet urine. Yellow spots, everywhere.

Bad if you own pets, thatches really bad (which means you have to bag), damages easily, grows fast, finicky.

Great choice of grass if you want to dedicate a lot of time to maintaining grass. I mean a lot. Like, become the weird guy in the neighborhood that can't go on vacation because he has to stay at home to do lawn maintenance.

And seeding with zoysia presents it's own problems since it doesn't really germinate that fast.

It is pretty when everything works out though.

Have emerald zoysia, it grows super thick when watered properly. So even though it grows super slow you need to cut often if you don't want to bag. Otherwise thatch will build up and fungus will occur.

Need to keep it short as well, takes a while to recover if damage occurs

I put down Palisades Zoysia sod and it’s amazing. It’s only been down since March and I can’t say enough good things about it.

I have palisades and the blades are more course than I though they would be. It’s not a soft fine blade grass like Bermuda. Looks good though, I used it bc I have some well shaded areas.

I barely do anything to my zoysia and it's fine. Cut it once a week, water it when it needs it, and I have a local company that weeds and feeds it. So I spend maybe an hour a week cutting and edging and it's fine. Not the prettiest lawn in the hood, but that's not my goal.

Like someone said, it is susceptible to browning from dog piss. And it browns pretty quickly if it goes without water for too long, but it's resilient and comes back just as quick when you water it.

Do you bag when you cut?
Rotary mower i assume?
How high do you cut?

And thanks for the help.

I only bag once or twice in the summer. Mostly because my riding mower doesn't have the bag attachment so I have to use a walk behind when I do. The company that sprays for weeds and fertilizes it said to never bag when it's coming out of dormancy in the spring because the old grass acts as an extra fertilizer. Yes, I'm lazy. Once it is dormant, I'll do one final cut where I cut it really short and bag it. Usually around late October. I've been in the house 18 years and have only had to dethatch it once.

I have a Cub Cadet lawn tractor and cut it pretty short. Not sure if that's ideal, but that's how everyone else in the neighborhood does it so I follow suit. It's around the middle setting on my lawn tractor and leaves it just above the top of my foot when I walk barefoot on it after cutting.

FWIW, I have emerald zoysia.

kind of agree here. If it is hot AF and no rain for a few days, it will yellow in spots.

damages easily

Disagree here. It handles my four dog's traffic very well.

grows fast,

Agree. With all this rain, you could almost cut every five days. That's probably most grasses though.

Don't get this. My dude cuts once a week. I put out Bonus S once in the Spring, fertilize in June/July, put winterizer out in Oct/Nov, and put Halts down in February. I do the same for my St. Aug in the front. Just water accordingly.

Umm... what?

Fertilize when you are supposed to (or have a lawn service do it), water weekly if the rain doesn't water it for you and cut it weekly. That's literally it. I can't imagine any grass being easier.

The yard was mostly Bermuda, with a big oaks tree in the front. Around the oak tree was mostly weeds. I installed a sprinkler system and with proper watering and alittle fert, the zoysia just came up and has really taken over. Now it is moving into the sunny areas where the Bermuda is fairly thick.

I have laid down some zoysia sod in my backyard in the shady areas in the hopes it will eventually overtake the Bermuda. It's going to be a slow process over the next several years, but I'm excited to see what happens

I'm not going to say you're wrong but I have 3 dogs and 3 cats. No issues with browning.
I've been in my house for 11 years and have had zoysia for most of that. Never one dethatched. I mower is a mulching mower and have never done otherwise.

for the 1st time this year I did get some brown patch in my front yard. I bought the stuff to get rid of it and then fertilized after a week. My yard looks better this year than it ever has.

I have palisade zoysia I believe. It's either that or meyer.

Zoysia is the king of grass IMO. Just laid some more sod a few weeks ago

My dogs definitely burn my zoysia. Started giving them some little treats that make it stop. It still gets a spot but doesn’t completely kill it anymore.
