Zoysia or St. Aug

Other than cutting, edging, and weedeating -- and watering, that's about the extent of my knowledge when it comes to sod/grass. I'll spinkler some fertlizer every once in a while, but I honestly don't know the difference between fertiizers -- and could be causing more harm than good with my existing yard. Right now, I have a mixture of Centipede (about 80 %) and the rest is Zoysia.
I know that I don't want Bermuda or Centipede. Which of the two in the subject line are best against weeds -- and is easier to maintain? Any of them more resistant to dog urine and shite?
Note, this is for Ascension Parish --- new construction. Sod will be laid in the winter, if that matters.

Had never heard of this before you posted it ... just looked it up ... and this might be exactly what I am wanting.

Common Bahia falls into the weed category. To answer your question, St. Aug is the highest maintenance turf. It is very susceptible to fungus and disease, especially if you have a heavy clay soil that does not drain well. However, a well-maintained St Aug lawn is the best type of grass to prevent weeds due to its aggressive & dense form of growth. Dog urine is going to kill any type of grass that you put. Just try to train it to not pee in the same spot.
You can almost lay sod at any time of the year in South Louisiana but if you can try to aim for late winter/early spring.
I would recommend a soil test first. That way you know what type of fertilizer is best.

quote:all non native turf grasses are “weeds”. Bermuda especially. Bahia makes a thick, lush, green turf that crowds out undesirables by runners and by seed. It needs no fertilizer, no watering and no other maintenance whatsoever except for a regular mow (I mow every other week). It will tolerate heavy traffic and pet activity. Plus it is a forage for wildlife (not great but better than others) if that matters at all to you.
Common Bahia falls into the weed category.
it will grow in any soil condition but most importantly will grow in the heavy clays of most new construction situations.
more people should sow it and and those people would spend less time working on their lawn and more time enjoying their lawn

When we redid our backyard we did Zoysia and I’m very happy with it

I have Zoysia in the front and St. Aug in the back. I'm slowing digging plugs from the front and putting them in the back. My St. Aug constantly has fungus.

I’d go with zoysia out of those two. St. Aug. is drama

My Zoysia has been great. It is spreading (slowly) into the empty lot next to us.
Zoysia is the last grass weeds want to see at a Sonic.

I wouldn't get st augustine just because of the dog.
I ripped all mine out because of the dog piss damage.Bermuda always filled in the spot and not st augustine.
If your dog has a spot they like to lay in the grass, that will look like crap and the walking trail he will make to that spot.
I have st augustine on parts of my property and it looks great and i give it zero fertilizer or water or care.Just pull the occasional weed.
But anywhere the dog hangs out alot is a no for me.

If you want to cut your grass every 3 or 4 days. You can watch that crap grow! I made that mistake. It makes a beautiful lawn, but man, it will wear you out. I killed it all and sodded St. Aug.

Zoysia is great. Just get ready for an arse load of clippings. It’s amazing.

Love my zoysia. This pic is before I cut it, but it looks incredible when it's freshly cut.

What fungicide does everyone use for St Aug. Mine is struggling and BioAdvanced isn't working.

I feel like zoysia holds up to dog pee a bit better

Yes X 1000
Get a top rated bermuda type grass; one that's drought resistance and almost immune to bugs/diseases.
