re: Why do people build wood fences instead of planting hedges?

My Japanese yew hedge is thick, 7 feet tall, and would be a beast to get through. A purse dog could probably get under it but any real dog can’t.
Great, and just how many years of growing did it take for that hedge to get that tall????
If I want my privacy in my yard, I want it when I want it, not whenever a plant fills in after several years. Oh, and I don't have to trim, water and feed my fence.

Takes about 5 years to fully establish and give a complete screening but def worth it.
Took me a day to put my fence up so the dog only had to be chained up for a day. Not 5 years.

We should just plant some hedges along the Mexican border. That’ll do the trick.
On a side note, I’ve got a lot of coyotes and deer in my area. 6 foot fence keeps the pets and flowers safe.

Don’t get me started about the people in and about New Orleans. One of the few places in America where the owner of the fence builds with the ugly side facing the neighbor. I grew up with respect for neighbors so if we put up a fence it was with the ugly side facing our property
I actually put the finished side towards the neighbor. With the framed side facing in, it is also a safety feature because it makes climbing the fence to get into my yard much more difficult.

Love those GS Pointers. I keep my son’s pointer at times and he can jump over my older 4ft fence or open back gate with his nose!!! But yes rather my back yard red tops fencing or Jap yews over fencing.

To me it doesn't look like the fence belongs to you if you build it that way.

I've always done the opposite, and would expect the same from my neighbors. If I am paying the money for the fence, I want to look at the "pretty" side. My neighbor didn't have to pay anything for the fence between our properties, so he doesn't mind seeing the rails.

They are cheaper to build.
Are you kidding?
When's the last time you priced anything out?
And My fence is cedar. It's 10yrs old and is going strong.

You put the “pretty” side facing the street and it’s up to the customer as to which side faces the interior of the yard. Most people want the “pretty” side facing in. They are paying for it.

$10 a plant from local farmer
Spaced at 2.5 feet apart. Essentially $10 for every linear 3.5 feet when width of plant included.
Good luck building a wood fence at that price

So, your plan is to plant them and then in 10 years, it may or may not be enough to actually do the same job as a fence.
Gotcha.

Give me 1500 for some Japanese yews and shrub soil/ fert, a shovel and or trencher, and you water it t for the first 6 weeks daily and this could be your hedge in a few years

I’m fine with waiting on them to grow, btw.
What’s the price per each of those and spacing?
