What kind of trees should I plant?

We recently purchased a property in Ascension parish. We have just under 3 acres with a half acre pond. I have zero trees on property. The neighbor behind me has bamboo separating us, but everything else is pretty open and would like to have some greenery. What should I plant around the pond and then around the house?

Gotta work some live oak in there.

Definitely want to do that. I just have no idea how I want it all to lay out. Like where exactly to plant the trees. I love the openness of our yard but also want trees throughout so figuring that out is tricky

From experience... Love Live Oaks, but they hate slabs and foundations. Keep them at least 60+ from the house or driveways. I have 17 oaks all planted in the late 50s early 60s that have absolutely destroyed the foundation and driveway of my house.

if you want oaks willow oak is an excellent choice. LA super plant, grows fast, no maintenance, pretty tree and it bears lots of acorns. 2-3 trees on 3 acres is plenty
for smaller trees consider fruit bearing trees like mayhaw, persimmon, wild cherry, mulberry, etc which will provide food for you and the animals and bloom nicely in the spring. You can mix those in just about anywhere
at the pond edges try willow, wax Myrtle, Tupelo, river birch etc

Should I avoid cypress around the pond? My pond is a good 150 feet from the house.

The red box is the house but that’s how my property lays out. And yes I need to clear out my pond which will be another thread. I just want my property to look much more appealing

Decide whether you want fast growing, native, shade, food for wildlife, color or whatever quality you are looking for.
For fast growing, you might try the following:
Nuttall Oak
Red Maple
Hybrid Willow (around the pond or in low areas)
Eastern Cottonwood
Sycamore
Bald Cypress
Southern Catalpa
Some of these are trees you might not want due to downsides (roots, dropping lots of limbs, etc) and take a little added care to protect from deer when young and beavers if you have that issue.

depends on your tolerance for knees and dropped leaves. Personally I don’t think it’s a pond without a few cypress but others break out into hives when you mention them

I cannot add much as I am currently looking into the same, on a much smaller lot (1/4 acre). Do you have a 1 story or 2 story house?
The area I am looking to add trees are spots that will give me some shade to my a/c condenser, master bedroom, shed, and kids playset. Have mapped my expected shade zones watching neighbor's trees at various points of the day
I have a 1 story house, so my next area to search is tree options for closer to the house that don't have roots that are too destructive. Plus, I have several requests to make sure I have "pretty trees"

Do not put this anywhere near the pool if there is one or will be.

I'll throw out a suggestion for a river birch to plant in any low areas that may retain water

I have five different oak trees planted in my yard as well as Cypress and several fruit trees. I also have five sawtooth oak trees planted which I really love. They are not native to Louisiana, but do very well down here. The best part is, they grow really fast.

Depending on the type, you won't have to worry about planting trees. You'll have bamboo soon enough.

My mom’s neighbor has one. It’s probably the most beautiful tree that’s not a live oak that I’ve seen. It’s 19 years old and huge.

Medlars, because nobody plants them. Strive to be different!
