Conventional 10w30 or SAE 10w30
Any brand is better than others?
TIA

Amsoil 5w30 synthetic small engine oil would be a great choice after break in.

I'd rather a 10w-30 in an air cooled engine if using a multi weight. The greater the difference in the oil's multi weight index, the more prone it is to shearing under heat.
We aren't in cold weather, so no benefit to using 5w30 oil.
ETA typo

Do you really need to change the oil every 8 hours

once a week when running, i believe. Also, crossreference filters. I picked up some fram filters and 5qts of 5w30 from walmarks yesterday in case i have to do a few oil changes.

No. I'd change it about every 3 days if its continuous use running.

On natural gas recommended OCI is 100 hours, so a little over 4 days. I've been told by mechanics who work on NG engines for a living that realistically with proper service and quality filter / oil you can push that to 200 hours if in a bind (I would never).
That said, Honda, Kohler, Generac, John Deere, etc.. all make full synthetic small engine oils with higher levels of zinc / ZDDP that can be purchased at Lowes or Home Depot. This is the best way to go. As an option B to this, I'd get motorcycle / atv oil.

Lowe's will typically carry Briggs and John Deere brand lawn mower oil. They may be out. Could try local hardware stores that sell or service lawn mowers as well.

That’s what I use in my small engines. Generator is getting a fresh change today.

I just had a 26kw whole home kohler installed. Dealer told me change oil every 8 hours if it’s running continuously. Is that just CYA? seems like overkill to me.

EVERYTHING at my house gets Rotella 15w-40 except my wife's Suburban. My duramax, gatortail, outboards, generator, zero turn.
It's hot AF after a storm, and especially in an enclosure. Run the heavy shite and lubricate the crap out of those internals. That thin stuff breaks down too easy with the long hard hours.

Rotella T6 15-40. I use it in everything(mowers, 4 wheelers, tractors, OPE) except gas engine cars. It holds up very well to the hellish heat of a south LA summer.
My dad borrowed a generator, ran it non-stop for 12 or 13 days without changing the oil and the oil still had a little life left in it. That's like running a car 20 plus thousand hard miles without changing the oil.
