My AC condenser needs to be replace and company who checked it out wants to use a 3 Ton Goodman 14.3 Seer. I don’t know if that is a good brand or not. My house has all Carrier parts. What are good name brands and which ones do I need to stay away from?

My A/C guy on the Northshore likes Amana ( I think the reason was they have a warehouse nearby, so getting parts is easy and they have a good warranty program)

No - Goodman is manufactured by Daikan, Trane is a different company all together.

I got a Daikan and I’m on my 3rd set of coils if that tells you anything. 10 yr warranty though.

That’s not good. I know you are under warranty but how much do those coils cost?

The powerhouse of the Gulf South WWL870AM brought to you Trane. It's hard to stop a Trane

I’d focus more on the quality and attention to detail of the installer more so than the manufacturer of the equipment - regardless of manufacturer most single stage condensing units are comparable in function and reliability - each has pros and cons.

But since you said your house has mostly Carrier components, I’d personally try to go with a Carrier condensing unit that is matched to your Carrier indoor air handler/furnace/evaporator coil, as you indicate only the condensing is being replaced.

The house was built in 2011 and in a few years I will most likely replace what’s in the attic. I didn’t know if I got something else if that would interfere with the Carrier stuff that is in the attic or not.

Honestly, that sounds more like a bad initial install of your system that’s carrying over with each sequential repair - you using the same company - what are saying are the cause of the failures?

It’s two different units but I agree. They blame the spray foam…

Amana is made by Daikan, same manufacturer as Goodman HVACs, but is a better line of equipment with more features and a better warranty. Getting parts and the warranty is a strong consideration when choosing a HVAC brand.

They’re blaming your coils failing on spray foam? I’m curious to hear more now.

In most cases it won’t/shouldn’t. I had a similar situation in 2005 - the new condensing unit was not matched with the indoor unit and it operated trouble free until it was time to change the indoor unit a couple year later, at which time I matched the new indoor unit to the outdoor condensing unit. That system was changed out last Wed at 18 years of age - was virtually trouble free during that period, sans a evaporator coil that needed replacement in 2013.

Well there is some thought chemicals in Chinese drywall, spray foam, etc within more recently built houses are potential causes of premature evaporator coil (indoor coil) failure, but I don’t know if that is conclusively proven.

But it is not uncommon for indoors coils to begin leaking after 6 years for all manufacturers. New evaporator coils are now made of all aluminum and there is optimism that these coils won’t have the same leakage issues that coils made of copper + aluminum (2 dissimilar metals, electrolysis issues) have. Only time will tell.

Can you have a carrier unit and swap out the condenser for a Goodman? Curious as to how this will work for the OP.
