What happens if you build a deck without a permit?

This thing has multiple tiers and I'm trying to build it in stages. I originally figured it would be better for resale value to get the permit, but I've about had it with this process.

What deck? That was there when you bought it

If you're required to have inspections and/or permits for stuff like decks, I'd move. I'm not joking.

I've built many buildings, poured a bunch of concrete, did a 5 month house remodel, all within the last year--no inspections or permits.

I wired my woodshop with 1 30 amp plug, 4 20 amp plugs and 9 15 amp plugs, lights, mini split and al within the last month or sol No inspections or permits.

You must have an enormous deck. Wish mine was big enough to require a permit.

My dad did that once, rebuilt and expanded the deck and stairs without a permit and tried to say we just stayed in the existing footprint. They pulled up Google earth and went back a few years. "You sure about that"? We had to rebuild it.

There was an existing small deck, but the new one has multiple decks, and will requires all new footers.

Part of my concern is that my dumb arse already started the permit process, with both this and an irrigation system.

Call it hardscaping, not a deck. Landscaping and hardscaping do not require a permit where I live, but any deck attached anywhere to the house does.

Gonna suck if someone rats you out and you have to tear it all down. Why the hesitation to get a permit?

Possibly a dumb question, but where do you find permit required activities for EBR?

If you are a DIY type, like I am, building something as you go, like OP indicated he is doing, you may veer off in directions different than intended or as stated on the permit. Then it becomes a hassle and you have to stop, draw out the changes and submit again.

I completely understand the OP's opinion to avoid the permit and inspection process, but also, understand the position of a city wanting inspections for structural work to avoid any liability issues. Insurers are also starting to cover ONLY inspected work. If you do something on your own and it wasn't permitted, inspected & approved,v the insurers are writing those structures out of not writing the policy.

Had a friend try that last year in a well-off suburb. It was an at-grade deck. He got caught. He didn't get fined, but it cost him about six months worth of bureaucratic nonsense. He basically had to go in front of the council and plead his case, then he got put at the back of the line for every step of the government process.

I wish we lived in a free country. That would be awesome.

Why do you hate your family and neighbors. Obviously, you build a deck without a permit you will definitely do it wrong, and you are putting your family and neighbors at risk when it collapses and explodes.

This wording tells me that you have already discussed these plans with the permit office. If that is true, then you are asking for "random inspections" if you suddenly cancel/stop the process. I have heard horror stories about inspectors driving up and down the streets when a DIYer starts the permit process then stops. In one case (City of Kenner), they would often see, through their ring cameras, the inspector walking up to their yard to see if they started building their shed.

It all depends on if you get caught or not.

In my book, you have a new deck. Anyone who complains just wants their own deck but is too lazy or poor.

I had a handicap customer in Tuskegee, AL at one time. She hired a carpenter to build a damn wheelchair ramp to her front door. No permit was obtained and the city forced them to tear it down, get a permit, then rebuild it.

Pretty easy. Do you live in EBR? If yes, then it requires a permit.

I’m only half joking.
