I am in my amateur phase of wanting my lawn to look nice.

I believe this is crabgrass but wanted to confirm with yall.

How can I prevent this? Best way to remove it now?

Located in BR area. I sprayed Weed B Gone at the end of March.

Looks like Dallisgrass.

If so, glyphosate then sod over the spot is literally the only solution.

Appreciate yalls response.

Like I said, I am very amateur lol.

Can you walk me through exactly what that process looks like? Do I just throw glyphosate down and then go buy some St. Aug sod?

Just pull it up by hand after a good rain

hand pulling dallisgrass has a low chance of success. Get a shovel out and a wheelbarrow of clean sand. Dig up the dallisgrass and fill the holes with the sand. Be aggressive.

In a few months you’ll never know it was there. But do it now before it goes to seed

That large clump in the corner, I’d just glyphosate and then resod.

Smaller areas. You can dig out and plug from somewhere else in your lawn.

Another option with just one patch, I’ve had success getting an artist paintbrush and painting the leaves with glyphosate. Won’t kill much of the grass (hard to not drip on the grass), but will kill the dallisgrass.

Best way to combat the Satan of weeds aka Dallisgrass is a good pre-emergent schedule/program. Once it seeds, it's the devil on Earth.

After they have rooted: When you cut it, you'd be smart to cut the seed heads first with a pair of scissors and bag those heads so they don't broadcast with the mower. If they broadcast...you'll be fighting it every year...ask me...I know.

Of course the forbidden MSMA also works, but I can't endorse it or tell people to use it.

Not if I am the one doing it.

this. their roots go wildly deep, so the soil moisture has to be just right to pull it all up. 2 years ago, my yard looked like playing super mario 2 on NES. i had plugs everywhere. by this year, i may have seen 10-15 plugs left that i hadn't gotten the year before. it works, but you do have to pull it alllll out, and some will still tear off and you'll just know it'll grow back.

probably about 85% success rate if you choose proper dampness. can't be too wet. can't be too dry. i usually make sure every single blade is in my hand, and then i snag it just below where it breaks the ground and yoink it out.

I like this idea, but my wife would never let me live down the fact that i painted the grass with a paintbrush (her perspective).

The forbidden MSMA would only be used on Bermudagrass or zoysia turf, it will kill St Augustine and centipede turf. OP, NASA is telling you MSMA is not labeled for use on residential turf, meaning it’s is violation of federal law to use it in that manner.

This another good university article on Dallisgrass control with more details Dallisgrass in Turfgrass - Texas A&M Univ . Some of the other herbicides mentioned in the article are crazy expensive for the homeowner.

Thanks for catching that. I see so much on Bermuda I thought his was Bermuda also. I see now that it's not. Yeah don't use MSMA on St Aug or centipede.

it’s so easy and pretty effective.

Your call on if it’s worse being roasted by your wife, or roasted by the heat digging a hole and filling with dirt & re-plugging

i was watching a show on the areas of france that are off-limits due to contamination from the the severity of WW1 shelling in those areas, areas known as "Zone Rouge". One comment was the top 8" of soil were 18% arsenic. My first thought: "i bet the bermuda grass in that area is OUTSTANDING!"

Dallisgrass

it seems to always be closets to the roads and driveways. Tires must carry the seeds.

Glysophate and sod. you are wasting your time doing anything else, honeslty.
