I want to plant Rye grass on my 1.5 acre yard in Baton Rouge. I currently have a centipede and St Aug in different spots.

Any tricks to do this?

When should I do it?

What kind of seed to buy and where at ?

Did it for years and feel like it ruined my normal grass. Looks amazing during the winter but proceed with caution!

I feel the same. Looks great for part of the winter, but it always seemed to make the normal grass worse come spring time.

Look at aerial shots of Augusta National during the summer. You’ll rethink rye overseed.

So, OP, you want to be cutting grass thru the winter. You know that crap will get a foot tall?

Did it introduce a bunch of weeds or just hurt the health of the grass?

Make sure you use a perennial rye, specifically one formulated for athletic fields. It’ll get about 2” - 2.5” or so then stall out. It’s easy to maintain. I usually spray it with MSMA once warm season grasses start to come alive but if you have centipede you can’t use MSMA. Fertilize it when u plant it then again in about 2 months.

I've got a bare area that is pretty hard. Put some St. Aug plugs hoping they would spread but not much progress was made. Would throwing some rye down this winter help break up the soil and allow for easier spreading?

That sounds like it would be a good idea, if no more than to help suppress winter weeds in the bare area between plugs. Might have to try to scratch up the bare soil area for the rye grass seed. I assume you haven’t put down pre-emergent herbicide in that area, if so, then nix that idea.

Baseball coach here but I overseed every fall then kill it in spring . Doesn’t effect Bermuda at all. As other have said, I use Champions GQ rye (poa Anna free) and it doesn’t require as much cutting as traditional Gulf Rye or others

Have not. Leaning towards throwing some seed down.

Maybe 60' x 20' in a side yard not really visible from the street. So I'm not worried about having to do everything to make it uniform.

Do not use an annual rye especially Gulf annual.

Made that mistake. It was so thick and stayed wet it was impossible to cut.

Both, just year after year the normal grass took longer to come back, which introduced the weeds and then became very patchy. My neighbor and I always did the rye and we both had to resod this year and swore off of it.

I will miss that vibrant dark green grass during the winter though
